After noticing a difference since installing the f.lux application, I'd like to buy a pair of amber goggles to block out blue light in the evenings.

I wear existing glasses so they have to fit over these.

Can't find anything appropriate on google.

Nothing too expensive, I'm a poor student!

I have tried cheap blueblocking sunglasses from ebay and they only block about half the blue light. The Uvex or any from the US cost a fortune to import to the UK.

If you are in the UK or Europe this company is probably the cheapest that sells glasses that are actually effective. http://www.optimalowvision.co.uk/department.cfm?dept=20

I only found them after extesive searching. I have some blueblocking glasses from them that work well but I don't wear glasses so I don't know about the fitover ones. They do apparenty make me look like an alien...

Any pair that say 100% Blue light protection in the discription and have either orange, amber or red tinted lenses will work. For example:

I know what being a poor student it like...

Excellent, I emailed optical vision and the do fit over glasses. I'm also in Ireland so these are perfect. – sarah-ann Apr 30 2010 at 12:30
No worries :) took me ages to find them when I was looking, they don't seem to show up on google searches. – Matt Apr 30 2010 at 14:01
Happen to know any that are a bit more... stylish? – Aaron Griffin Apr 30 2010 at 22:33
I found that Cocoons and Eschenbach both will tell you have many nanometer their lenses block out depending on what color. eschenbach.com/… cocoonseyewear.com/sunwear/category.php?id=53 Cocoons says their orange lenses block 520 nanometer which blocks out 100% of blue light and they are cheaper. They sell them direct for 29.95 online for fitovers plus s&h. Maybe they would ship to UK. Eschenbach is a German company and you maybe able to find them in UK. Blue spectrum I believe is from 420nm to 470nm. Not all yellow and orange lens same nm – Hydrangea Oct 28 2010 at 21:20

Uvex makes saftey glasses that block out blue light. I believe that they make a pair that fits over glasses too. I bought mine online for about $9.00 (regular fit). In the "how do I hack my sleep?" thread there is a link to a source.

Easy way to block out blue light is the f.lux application (which you have) + turning down the brightness of your computer. I have a laptop, so for mine I press and hold "Fn" and then press the down arrow key to turn it down. Very minimal light and I can get to sleep much quicker.

Reading this thread, I decided to test a pair of Remington shooting glasses I have. They have amber-colored, plastic, wraparound lenses. After an initial adjustment of a couple of seconds, I find it quite calm to look at the screen. I am wearing them over my reading glasses.

They cost about $4 on sale at Walmart.

Here is a link to information about them:

http://www.safetyglassesusa.com/remington-t-10-true-jr-.html

...Lens Color: Amber - Increases visibility in low light and hazy conditions. Blocks blue light to help increase contrast and depth perception.

The better shooting glasses with the yellow lenses for shooting in bright light might be well worth testing if someone finds the less expensive ones not suitable.

Hope this helps a bit.

It's not just blue light hitting you eyes. It's the blue light hitting your skin that screws up the sleep notification signals. In fact it's probably mostly the effect on your skin that counts and not the effect on your eyes.

Also take a look at Robb Wolf's last blog post on sleeping and look at the intensities of various lights. Using your computer at night is orders of magnitude too bright. Glasses and f.lux are never going to make up for that.

Not to mention the mental stimulation. Even with F-lux, monitor turned all the way down, and blue blockers, when I get on a roll, I'm hard-pressed to stop before trying to find the end of the interwebs. I could easily read a book I'm interested in until dawn if I don't stop myself. – Happy Now Feb 28 2012 at 23:54

This is not a "fact" according to what I learned at med school! Melatonin production is only influenced by the light that goes through the eyes and hits the retina. Light that hits the skin do not influence the melatonin production at all. "Light/dark information reaches the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) via retinal photosensitive ganglion cells, intrinsically photosensitive photoreceptor cells," en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melatonin#In_mammals "Production of melatonin by the pineal gland is inhibited by light to the retina" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melatonin#Light_dependence – Preben Aug 1 at 17:17

Got my uvex off amazon, dropped the extra $1 for the sporty pair with mirror finish

They are not fashion glasses tho, quite large

Oops meant to put that they were a steal at $10 – Stephen-Aegis Jul 8 2010 at 23:33
I ordered those too. My 2 year old does not approve of me wearing them, and as a result they get yanked off of my face pretty quickly, so I've been finding it more convenient to just put lower wattage amber light bulbs into some lamps around the house. – Happy Now Feb 28 2012 at 17:16

I've seen blue blocking glasses on eBay for just £4.99. They are sold by a seller called rodsnconesdotnet and he claims over 99% blue light blocking.

He's in the UK and the link is http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/rodsnconesdotnet

Hope that helps.

Cheers

Steve

wouldn't it be more to the point to just limit your TV and electronic use in the evenings? I have f.lux too and love it but i think if i need special sunglasses to sit on my couch and stare at the tv all night then blue light is not my real problem. - just playing devils advocate here...i watch tv all night long even though i use f.lux on my pc.
