I ask this as inspired by my lunch, which is so far shaping up to be an enormous bowl of Brussels sprouts roasted in salted Kerrygold.

Do you regularly consume meals that happen to have no animal protein? If so, what do they look like?

I would consider it a meal with an egg on top, or maybe even cheese, not not just veg/butter. – Kim The Nourishing Cook May 24 2011 at 21:13

I thought about this one and I don't think I consider it a "MEAL" without meat. If it doesn't have meat, it's just a snack.

summed up well. – ben61820 May 24 2011 at 18:41
Nobody says it better. That's a t-shirt slogan if I've ever seen one. – Tom R. May 24 2011 at 22:34

No, i consume animal protein from flesh at every meal. I can't remember the last time I ate anything unaccompanied by animal meat.

Mine almost always have protein of some kind, too. Today's lunch struck me as an anomaly, so I couldn't resist asking PaleoHackers. – familygrokumentarian May 24 2011 at 16:26
yeah, its a good thread. And the thought has crossed my mind; especially after listening to lalonde and reading about autophagy, a little protein-fasting once in a while is prolly a good thing. At the moment the weights are heavy and recovery is kinda paramount though so i can't quite get my head around avoiding the rebuilding properties of protein for any length of time. Im prolly overthinking it, though – ben61820 May 24 2011 at 18:43

Yes, they are. I am eating fruit for lunch today. In the next few months, I plan to fast one day a month or so. During those days, protein-free meals (aka water) will be the norm.

That being said, I eat meat with almost every meal. But having such a regular diet is something that I have always been suspicious of.

Kamal, wish that you were blogging that experiment/results! Sounds interesting. – familygrokumentarian May 24 2011 at 16:28
Kamal, any special reasons for the 24h fast ? – Ikco May 24 2011 at 16:39
I would also like to see observations on that experiment! Also, do you plan to experiment with irregular meals anytime soon? I need to do that and would love to know how others are tracking their mental and physical observations. – baconbitch May 24 2011 at 16:48

Ikco and baconbitch-- The reason for 24h fasts and irregular meals is similar. My hunch that regular meat meals is not natural came from reading the young adult novel "The Hunger Games". There are several paragraphs about hunting and gathering, and I find it very hard to believe that humans were successful every single day with hunting and storing meat. Especially in eastern Africa circa 200,000 BC. That being said, I don't have enough energy to go read all about fasting and autophagy, but I trust that people have fasted and had lean times throughout human history, and it can't be all that bad – Kamal May 24 2011 at 18:11

So glad you asked this! I always eat some form of animal protein and lately, I'm seeing a little pudge in my midsection. I'm going to take a cue from Kamal and start to experiment with protein fasting. I've also started to consider going off IF and back to several small meals per day. I've become to dogmatic about paleo and feel that I need to question how/what I eat a bit more.

Sometimes jerusalem artichokes steamed and dipped in Kerrygold are a satisfying option for me. Maybe you didn't hunt anything today, maybe the PETA activists share a cubicle with you --or maybe you just feel like it. As the non-expert of the group, I hereby approve your lunch. Although, you know what's really good? Brussel sprouts and bacon. Mm.

Funnily enough I later found myself topping iceberg lettuce with leftover fried eggs. Animal protein ftw! – familygrokumentarian May 24 2011 at 18:32

I'm 100% Paleo and eat meat at almost every meal. There are days however, when I crave just fresh vegetables and fruit, so that's what I eat.

Rarely. And when I do, it is only because of the following reasons:

I am eating out and just having a salad because the menu does not appeal to me.

Its 100 humid degrees in East Texas, tomatoes are in season and am having cold tomato basil salad (sometimes with fresh mozzarella).

Or I just decide it's an "Ice Cream for Dinner" kind of day, because I'm human and I can. (Usually this also coincides with a 100 degree day)

During the unbelievably hot summers here, sometimes protein is not very appetizing after breakfast. Then I usually like the above mentioned items or berries, macadamia nuts, pickles, and fresh raw coconut. Meals without animal protein seem weird to me, more like a snack.

\o/ ICE CREAM FOR DINNER DAY! \o/ – sherpamelissa May 24 2011 at 16:57
I wish it was possible to buy unsweetened ice cream. It's not like it wouldn't taste good...! – Henny May 24 2011 at 17:22

i just make it unsweetened--a pint of cream, splash of vanilla and three egg yolks. – texasleah May 24 2011 at 19:14

I realize it's probably good for me to do a little protein fast to help kick in some autophagy once in a while. But I don't plan it. Most meals are very protein heavy (>1lb of meat every meal). But if I get busy and can't get to lunch or dinner, I just don't worry about it and call that my protein fast.

i do this quite a bit. at least with minimal protein. i love love love vegetables, even more now on paleo than i did as a vegetarian. my senses are so much more sensitive! i love roasted broccoli with some lemon juice and maybe a touch of shaved parm or some sliced almonds. raw brussels shredded and mixed with chopped apples and lemongrass aioli. strawberry spinach salad. and currys. especially coming into spring with all the amazing veggies starting to become available, and the weather becomes warmer, i look forward to my fat and veggie meals.

Bone marrow with some broccoli, garlic, lemon, and parsley, there is very little protein. I prefer it to butter. But it isnt as fast to cook with.

My meals usually look similar, 2 veggies and a protein (if not meat then an egg or two). If I don't have protein then I usually add chia seeds for some steady energy and fill-upness.

Meals (per se, indicating some effort to make) not really but I sometimes snack with a banana or heavy cream or creamed coconut.

I guess most of my veggie-heavy meals (typically a salad) still have something with eggs in one form or another and often, shrimp. I don't eat big portions of much of anything these days, so sometimes a can of green beans (but with a little butter) is enough to satisfy me, and that's a typical "meal" I'll warm up when I don't have much time and don't feel like thinking about it - something I can just make and eat and get on with everything else.

Yes this morning I had nuts and a banana. Yesterday for lunch I had a tomato, spinach, sprouts, cucumber, avocado mash. Other meals include: palm hearts, asparagus, and tomatoes or beets and almonds...mmmmm

Nope. Can't say I've had a single meal without meat or eggs in 9 months. I don't cheat and can even skip lunch, but when it's time to eat...............I eat. Vegetables just don't satisfy me.

I've also noticed that my daughter is a real carnivore-bacon-aholic now. I think she has finally forgotten all about pasta and sugar and just naturally replaces these things with fats.

If I ask her if she wants a snack- mid afternoon...her response, "yes some bacon". Of course I try to limit the bacon, but it does please me that her choices are meat as opposed the fruit or any other garbage.

Yes. I eat fruits on its own and i frequently eat potatoes and squash with butter and cream only.

Yes. I do this a lot mostly for the benefit of autophagy although sometimes I just want a huge quantity of vegetables.

In the summer I may just do salad with or without some cheese. I love Caprese salad (mozzarella tomato and basil) or substitute feta for the mozzarella. Yum.

When it's colder I often do a vegetable stew. I love having a huge bowl of roasted veggies (mix of whatever I have.) Almost weekly I make a veggie curry with cauliflower, spinach, coconut milk and spices.
