How many of you have a work schedule that only allows for you to workout when you can? And how do you handle your food intake? There may be days where I can plan to workout and then have my protein/yam meal afterwords, but there are some days when I can't workout until later in the day. Any tips or tricks on how to deal with this type of erratic schedule?
Our workout schedule is often erratic, but we generally don't alter our diet based on what we did at the gym, and haven't noticed any negatives. It seems a lot of people in the paleo community fall into this min-maxing routine, but we argue that doing so is a matter of diminishing returns; it's doubtful that huge returns will be afforded by being super-selective about food intake on certain workout days. If you eat paleo overall, you should do fine regardless of when you workout.
I workout randomly, when I get a chance, or when I feel like exercising. The only thing I do is if I've done something that is extremely draining, such as jogging for distance, or a high intensity workout, I try and eat something a little more carby like a sweet potato. Otherwise, I don't bother to change how I eat.
I do my best to have a quasi-schedule, but then life gets in the way and ruins it. So I just try to do at least something as many days of the week as possible. Some days that is a full body lifting workout, others its 10 minutes of sprints on my home bike or 5 minutes balancing on my Bosu. Many other days I do nothing and just know that Im doin' what I can.
I made the decision to stop 'working out,' as in doing physical exercise for the sole purpose of exercise. For the past fifteen years, I'd go in and out of having a moderate workout routine (2 or 3x a week with cardio and some weight training). I always liked how I felt after a workout, but it wasn't something I could stick to for longer than eight months because eventually I'd just tire of being in the gym or wearing workout clothes or smelling the chlorine from the pool or smelling people's BO in yoga class, etc.
So I made the conscious decision to only be physical in the context of my life and what I personally enjoy. I live in a city where I walk everywhere and don't need a car. I walk for hours when I have the chance, even in the dead of winter, and I live on the top floor of my walk-up and don't get winded like some people do. In the warm months I like to ride my bike and can do that for hours as well. I'd like to take the occasional fitness or workout class but it's not a big priority.
Going paleo I've leaned out to the point where people who haven't seen me in a while comment on the change and assume I've been working out. I do feel more limber and my muscles feel stronger, but that could be from high energy levels and not suffering from SAD-induced malaise. I know that once I'm riding my bike again I'll lose a little more fat and will get more muscular.
I find it impossible to workout when I can't, so I workout when I can. Sometimes it's working out in the yard or walking the dogs. The 241 of doing something for more than just the exercise is a plus. Being super committed to artificial exercise is not Primal or Paleo. It's pretty CW actually. There's always something to be done to work the muscles and get the wind up besides the "workout".
