Breakfast: coconut pancakes topped with a blackberry reduction sauce, bacon and eggs fried in lard

Lunch: grass-fed beef burger with bacon and avocado (add swiss cheese if you're primal) between two portobello mushroom "buns" with a side of yam fries fried in tallow

Snacks: kale chips or paleo trail mix

Dinner Appetizer: bacon wrapped dates stuffed with almonds

Dinner Main Course: slow cooked Moroccan-style lamb shanks with a side of zaalouk, a Moroccan eggplant tomato salad, and roasted butternut squash

Dessert: grain-free magic cookie bars http://balancedbites.com/2010/12/easy-recipe-grain-free-magic-cookie-bars.html

I try not to make my dishes too meat-based b/c my non-paleo friends (mostly vegetarians) tend to think that is all we eat. Non-paleo eaters often get turned off by our grain-free lifestyle so I also like to show off our paleo baked goods made with almond meal and coconut flour. Also, I find that anything with butter, coconut, bacon or avocados in it will make my non-paleo friends very happy!!

As they say in the restaurant biz, "you can't go wrong with meat and potatoes". White potatoes aren't especially Paleo but can be allowed, so just your basic steak/meat + potatoes + veg is a good "gateway" meal, this would include various stews. Sub sweet potatoes for the white and you're doing better. You could make some pasta on the side if they require something like that, and encourage them to have only a small portion of it.

My family is not Paleo, so every night I have the challenge of providing a meal that is both Paleo and non-Paleo (I am the main cook). Usually I just make a Paleo meal and have some pasta on the side and that does it. Some recent menus:

Skirt steak with lime juice pan fried in olive oil (Jacques Pepin recipe)
Steamed broccolini with olive oil and vinegar
Boiled sweet potatoes sliced and cooked in butter

Oysters on the half shell
Whole roasted rock fish
Seaweed salad
Pickled radishes
Fish fin with chili
White rice
Ice cream + sorbet

Chicken, lamb, and beef kebabs
Basmati rice
Cucumber slices and baby carrots with oil + vinegar

Hangar steaks on the grill
Steamed broccoli rabe with olive oil + balsamic vinegar
Purple cabbage braised in bacon fat and white wine
Penne pasta

Pork tenderloin with pomegranate juice sauce (Jacques Pepin recipe)
Spinach sauteed with garlic and olive oil
Penne pasta

You get the idea. I skip the "white" foods (potatoes, rice, pasta), my family has that to varying degrees. Everyone is happy, and my diet is nearly 100% Paleo. There are a few small cheats in there, such as pomegranate juice in the sauce, but I can easily get through an entire week without one gram of processed food nor any sugar or grains.

Roasted or baked chicken or roast beef and sweet potatoes with a vegetable on the side. They won't know it's paleo because it's pedestrian enough. You can cook the vegetables, like broccoli, with some chicken stock for flavor. I have posted the sweet potato recipe elsewhere. For dessert, for lacto-paleo types, I serve homemade greek yogurt and fruit parfaits with a little honey and nuts if desired.

Steak, brussels sprouts roasted with bacon, and sweet potato so they can have their precious starch! I've also gotten rave reviews on the Butter Chicken from Mark's Daily Apple (I serve over roasted cauliflower). Pancakes are always a hit too; my mom is german, so we always had Apfelkuchen growing up (chopped apple in the batter, topped with applesauce, cinnamon and sugar). I make a pretty good version with coconut flour (sans sugar).

We're cooking out this weekend and I'm thinking of throwing a couple rib racks on the grill and pairing it with some au gratin potatoes (sans flour) and some simple veggie sides.

I'm going to do deviled eggs for an appetizer, half regular and half with avocado instead of mayo. I might also steal the bacon-wrapped date idea from above, yum! 8)

Dessert, I'll probably make a chocolate torte...plenty of sugar, but no wheat. It's so rich that everyone only ever has a tiny slice of it and they're satisfied. I'll also have some fruit available...strawberries and cantaloupe, probably.

  • Essentially any piece of meat. Pretty much all Americans are used to seeing that.
  • Roasted white potatoes if the guests are seriously finnicky. If not, then more squashes/sweet potatoes kinda thing just for "novelty".
  • Big salad.

I find with those three general classes of food if you will, no one thinks "Oh we have to eat his paleo shit", etc. Its all rather "normal" food for Americans.
