Anyone else experiencing throat burning from fermented cod liver oil? Is it rancidity or something else?

flag
Yes, I have experienced the same sensation. I read somewhere else that this was completely normal. Sorry I forgot where I saw or it or else I would link it up. – Mike May 28 2011 at 3:07
Straight olive oil does the same thing to many people. I get the burning sensation from both. It's common and pretty normal. – January Jan 11 2012 at 20:47

Although I know mostly everyone loves cod-liver oil. I do not, in 2000, WWF placed cod on the endangered species list. Even if I am a meat eater I have my limits. And as a meat eater I choose to eat organic, humanely-raised meats that are not at risk for instinction. What do you use it for?

I thoroughly respect your perspective. It is a good source of vitamins A and D. – Richard N May 27 2011 at 14:11
Maybe there are other things you can use instead, depending on what you use it for. Although you are entitled to your own free will ;) – Uggla May 27 2011 at 14:24
Uggla- Green Pastures does have a skate oil as an alternative. They said that it's not quite as nutritious, but is more sustainable. – WordVixen Jul 5 2011 at 6:31

Thats true Cod is very overfished. i think in some arctic region its still ok to fish cod. Thank you Uggla for your contrivution. I dont know if skate is also good to eat. I dont realy trust WWF anymore, he is not a realy nonprofit organisation and also works with aggrobuisness together and with clearcut of the rainforest. And actualy the vietnam farmed pangasius was on their list to cause they got pressure or whatever from companies they removed it. WWF isnt as free as other eco organisations. There is a site like the baymarine aquarium or something similiar sounding. Its has a list of fish. – oak0y Jul 5 2011 at 8:40

Yeah, I've experienced the same burning when biting through my fermented cod liver oil pills (was curious about the taste) from green pasture. After this experience i just swallowed the whole thing.

Nowadays, I eat cod liver in its own oil (tin). It's very cheap, absolutely delicious and enough for one or even two meals. 8oo kcals in one serving !!!

...thanks, they never got back to me so I'm done with it. Maybe there is another explanation but I've never liked taking supplements that involve oil base for potential rancidity reasons (like vitamin E and CoQ10) though I'm less into supplements now anyway. Weston Price got me going with the cod liver oil. – Richard N May 28 2011 at 18:56
hei Paul can you post a lin to the product: Here you also get cod liver in oil. i havent seen it in own oil in germany yet. – oak0y Jul 5 2011 at 8:35
amazon.de/Rügen-Fisch-Dorsch-Leber-115/dp/… , in Berlin it's available at almost every supermarket (Rewe, Edeka) but be aware, one can contains at least 16 g of pufa! – Paul Jan 11 2012 at 17:47

Green Pastures discusses the differences in taste, etc on this page:

http://www.greenpasture.org/public/Products/FAQ/index.cfm#1

Maybe it will help.

I found putting the oil at the back of my mouth and chasing it with apple cider vinegar diluted with water instantly stops any reaction, but be careful to have your throat closed when you squirt the oil there! I've taken almost a full bottle now and find it much easier. I now use a half teaspoon, take it and follow it up with milk or a food. Since it's my first bottle and the above site says the taste sometimes is different, it will be interesting to see what the next bottle is like.

I did do some research on forums like the GAPS or SCD diet forums and the burning, the wicked taste, etc, are normal. So I am trusting that it is not rancid. I get fast shipping and put it right in the fridge. It's been around at least several years. I'd think there would be warnings online if there was a danger.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Peggy but this was not a mild reaction. It was to a solid in the oil that I'm sure you've noticed. The intense burn lasted for a couple of hours regardless of drinking lots of water afterwards and it continued in my stomach where I am assuming the particulate landed. If it wasn't rancidity I'd like to know what the bleep it was. I've been taking the fermented CLO for a while with only occasional mild burning before this. – Richard N Jun 23 2011 at 20:14

I had the same experience the first time I took FCLO straight (not in pills). A few hours after I took it, I got a horrendous burning from my stomach up to my throat. I seriously felt like I was going to die. Apparently some people can get nasty acid reflux from taking FCLO- and I did. But only the first day. The second day there was some burning, but not so bad. After the second day- none.

I was taking the emulsified stuff, and I'm never doing that again. The taste I could deal with, and I got over the burning quickly, but the texture and the taste combined is more than I can stand. I currently take the pills, but I'm looking into the liquid stuff. I just wish they had the FCLO and butter oil blend in liquid form.

How is this stuff made? I didnt see the method on green pastures site. Why is it better than normal CLO? You would think it would be rancid. Anyhow sounds awful, but i may give it a try if theres some evidence...Thanks!

When I put my meal in the bowl/plate, I mix CLO into the bone broth or other liquid in the warm food. It actually has a nice effect on overall flavor and I've never experienced any burning or other after-effects.

Wow - I have just had to look this phenomenon up after experiencing a horrific burning at the back of my throat and all the way down my oesophagus immediately after taking 2 ml of Green Pastures fermented cod liver oil by syringe. I actually wondered if I should go to Emergency as I thought I might be having an allergic reaction. I have been taking this oil, in exactly the same way, for several months, and before that (with a six=month gap in between) I took it for over a year. There was a very, very mild burning, more like a catching in the throat occasionally, but nothing like this! I think I may have to stop taking it as I could not face this happening again. BTW I looked down my throat with a mirror and a torch and it is very red indeed. The burning is only just beginning to go away after five minutes and a LOT of water.

This is 100% normal and can be expected from CLO.

Read the disclaimer on this page, which is one of the brands recommended by Weston A. Price (about 1/2 way down the page in an yellow box):

"Are you NEW to fermented cod liver oil? Please be aware that the fermented cod liver oil is very strong tasting and due to the enzyme content leaves a tingle in your throat. If you are new to the fermented cod liver oils, we recommend you try the capsules."

Consequently, I'm now wondering how to handle the first batch that I just ordered! After hearing all of your accounts, i'm not too excited to exierience this "tingle." Any other ideas of how to handle it/lessen the effects? – DanielleO812 May 16 2012 at 18:42
I'm not buyin it...my experience was awful, I've never had such caustic burning in my throat which then continued in my stomach and lasted a long time. Wouldn't touch it again. There are plenty of other good sources to get A and D from. – Richard N May 17 2012 at 1:58
I mix mine with honey and hid it some food or in a smoothie. Still trying to figure out the best way to get it down. Glad to see I'm not the only one. I can't buy the favored kind due to the high oxalates in cinnamon & Choc. – Want2BHealthyGirl May 17 2012 at 3:53

This is very interesting and about 15 months ago I tried plain FCLO and had a similar response and then a horrible cough began at the exact moment and lasted for 10 weeks! (I wonder if we had the same batch of FCLO?) I thought that something from the FCLO had become lodged in my chest. By throat burned, I gagged and thought that I might soon die all for the good of trying to my my breastmilk more full of DHA, etc. Now I am wondering if there might be truth to rancidity in the product. I have tried the capsules and they are fine, but I am still wondering if FCLO is a product that we should even be "eating" if it is so horrendous.

This may seem a silly question, but is it flavored? The cinnamon is the easiest for me to get down but it can get a little hot.... If it's not flavored, maybe contact the company about your reaction and see what they say.

it's the unflavored...I have called them...I won't be buying it again after this reaction unless they have some explanation. It might have to do with some of the particulate matter in the bottle that you've probably noticed too. – Richard N May 27 2011 at 14:45
I have the cinnamon tingle and get a warmer sensation from it. I chalked it up the the flavoring. – Todd May 27 2011 at 15:32

Wow, now I know where those burning sensations were coming from (though mine also felt like something was caught in my throat). I thought it was from another supplement I was taking with it, but guess it was the cod liver oil! I've only gotten it a couple times though. Pretty uncomfortable.

I was really excited to take the fclo. I took it for a few weeks and didn't notice any good or bad effects so I forgot about it for a bit. when I took it one day I had a terrible stomach ache and burning which I never thought to attribute to the fclo. the next day I didn't take it and was fine day after that I took a quarter tsp and it started burning immediately. it felt like I swallowed bleach. I had to go to emergency after being up for 3 days straight and not being able to eat. I'm only starting to recover now a month later. be careful with the fclo!! to be honest, I'm pretty hesitant to take any supplements now.
