Alright, I seem to have had a particularly bad idea this morning. I took a TBSP of coconut oil soon after I woke this morning, as I was really hungry and wanted to have my actual breakfast before I get on the road for a long drive today. Drank some Trader Joe's electrolyte water as well. Took a shower. Almost barfed in shower. Barfed in toilet. Laid down, nauseous. Ate an orange and some rice cakes (shame). Still nauseous, but better. Boyfriend's running to the 24-hour Giant Eagle to get me some carbs.

Any idea why this happened? I typically consume a Tbsp or so of coconut oil daily, just not first thing in the morning, and I haven't been so much as sick to my stomach or vomited from anything but alcohol (twice) for the past few years.

One tablespoon is A LOT if you have not been regularly consuming about that amount for a while. You need to start small and titrate up with coconut oil. I've been eating it for about two years very regularly and even for me if I had that amount straight like that I'd prolly not fare well. Try one teaspoon at a time, and like others have said, usually your system will appreciate it more with other foods. – ben61820 May 28 2011 at 12:53
I do this a ton.....after your gut is fixed it causes no issues. Before it is it will. S work on your leaky gut with kombucha kraut dill pickles horseradish etc..... – The Quilt May 28 2011 at 16:43

Dude, eating a rice cake and an orange to soothe an upset tummy is nothing to feel shame about. You're not a bad person for eating either. I mean, if you were kicking a puppy or cheating on your taxes while eating it, that's one thing. But what you eat does not dictate the quality of person that you are. :) – Kaz May 29 2011 at 1:54
Coconut oil makes me super nauseous too! For about 6 hours. I haven't puked but easily could have. Too much Coconut Milk will give me the same reaction.(like one whole can..have done it. Was worth it). I am fine with coconut flour and coconut water. I was hoping the reaction was a bad bacterial die-off. Ah well. – Senneth Jun 1 2011 at 20:59

Coconut oil is very acidic and that can be hard on your stomach. I suggest you use it in cooking rather than just eating it raw if you are sensitive to it.

I myself am also sensitive to it and it burns my throat, so I will eat it in other ways, together with foods and drinks so that I do not have a reaction.

That's interesting; it also burns my throat. I thought I was imagining things. And I've never been able to eat coconut oil straight without having the OP's experience, even small amounts. So I'm with you; I use it for cooking once in a while, and that's it. – Rose May 28 2011 at 14:11
What about coconut milk straight? – BeeRoe May 28 2011 at 14:29
The acid is actually quite helpful for reflux..... – The Quilt May 28 2011 at 16:45
Why do you guys feel the need to use it? – Grok May 29 2011 at 2:30

I've had a number of similar experiences, and I wonder if it could be the combination of coconut oil and water? Coconut oil seems to take a particularly long time to leave my stomach, and since water and oil don't mix, I wonder if it makes it even harder to pass through?

Also I might attribute the reaction to the strong anti-fungal and nasty-killing properties of coconut oil (unrefined). Digestive-wise coconut oil is one of the easiest things to assimilate, it doesn't even trigger much bile release, it just absorbs into the system. The nausea (which I've experienced - I did the exact same thing a couple weeks ago) might be due to a large killing-off of yeasts/bad bacteria in the gut.

But presumably it didn't get to the gut yet and was still in the stomach. – James May 29 2011 at 18:32
Yeah, it seems like there are differing understandings of how the oil enters the system - posters above seem to think it takes a while to be absorbed and is difficult for the body, but my understanding is that it's such a good food source because it is crazy-easy to absorb into the system. – Mei-ling May 29 2011 at 21:08

Maybe it was the electrolyte water? Also be careful you are using a really pure coconut oil not the cheap stuff you find in Walmart.

Coconut oil burns my throat too, as someone mentioned on this thread. I tried eating the "Coconut Mana" which is basically the meat of the coconut, and although it was incredibly delicious, my thought as to why it burns the throat is because of the natural healthy acids in it, although I'm not certain.

Although if you don't have any issues with it, and most people don't it seems, I highly recommend getting some. Not only does it have an amazing taste, but it's so creamy and melts in your mouth.

The only place I found it that doesn't wreck the checkbook is online @ http://goo.gl/Cc1Qc

I got $10 off my first order with the promo code ZRN321 - enter it at checkout if you decide to get some.

I still eat it and absolutely love it!
