Me: 36, female, slightly underweight (weight is going up, but I don't own a scale - my booty tells me that it's on the rise, though), mother of two - gave birth last December, weaned three months ago.
Paleo for nearly five years.
Very low carb for two years or so (carbophobia, not due to insulin resistance).
Morning fasted exercise (only time it can be fit in). Mostly weights and interval conditioning. no long cardio. (I eat right after).
Sleep is so so. Difficulty getting to sleep but can stay asleep once I get there.
Sudden onset bad skin - oily, large pores, redness, surface capillaries.
Amenorrhea - no cycle since March of 2009. (Prego from April 2009-December 2009 - breastfeeding December 2009 to March-ish 2011).
Slight shedding of hair on top of head.
A bit of fuzzy facial hair - newest development.
Things ain't pretty!
If this were you what woud you demand of your physician in terms of tests etc? What lifestyle changes would you make immediately?
Thanks a bunch hackers!
The first thing that comes to mind is a thyroid issue, but there is disagreement in medical community about what levels should be considered normal. I had to go to a holistic practitioner (in this case, an MD with an open mind) to get to the bottom of my own. Read this link for a good Thyroid 101 and a better understanding of what you should ask a breakdown of: http://thyroid.about.com/od/thyroidbasicsthyroid101/a/confusion.htm
Some other considerations: adrenal issues such as adrenal fatigue (more common) and adrenal hyperplasia (less common) can cause thinning hair, acne and facial hair because of the surge in androgen production. Keep in mind, however, that thinning hair can be a temporary side-effect of pregnancy hormones leaving the system. Adrenal and thyroid issues can both affect libido and sleep.
Good luck! Hope you're feeling better soon.
I would look to Julia Ross as a resource. Her books The Mood Cure and The Diet Cure have a wealth of information on which tests work in her experience helping many thousands of people in her clinic. http://www.moodcure.com/julia.html
