Hi, Have been looking for beef jerky in the stores (I`m from Norway) but I cant find any without sugar ect added.

In the pets store I found a lot of dried heart/stomach ect that was witout any added ingridients, just 100% natural. It wasn`t too expencive either. I just wonder what do you think about this? Can I eat it, even if its dogs food? I recon since it shuold be safe for my dog, it sholkd be safe for me to eat as well?

..haha, people had to think I was a freak, if they saw me eating dogs food XD

I had a cousin who ate dog jerky, saying it was as tasty as the human stuff but at half the price. Never got sick from it.

nice. I recon that most of the time its safe eating it, but from the answers above here, there are probably still some risk eating it. But I will definitly buy some to my familys dog next time I´m going home, and try some myself, hehe. – norwegian girl May 31 2011 at 19:44

I absolutely would not feed myself, let alone my dog ANYTHING that is labeled as "Pet Food". (Disclaimer: Yes, I'm a Raw Feeder and have been for 8 years.)

Pet food is the dumping grounds for the human food chain and as such contains such lovely things as "The Four Ds": dead, dying, down, diseased animals. In addition, Pet Food includes animals that have been fed medications throughout their lifetimes, producing meat not fit for human consumption. (An example of this is the common use of Bute in the equine industry.)

Why not make your own jerky?

I haven`t thought about it that way...The thought of eating that meat grosses me off now.. I will definitely try to make my own jerky some day. I`m going to buy some local- hunted deer in the autumn, and will definitely try to make jerky of some of that meat. Really looking forward to that. – norwegian girl May 31 2011 at 13:54

Raw milk is sometimes labeled as "pet food" to get around ridiculous laws making it illegal to sell raw milk for human consumption. – wood May 31 2011 at 17:39

As someone who was raised on raw milk, BIG thumbs up to supporting your local farmers!! – Marie May 31 2011 at 19:32

Wow!

If it's completely natural, then as you assume, I guess it would be fine. However I'm tipping the manufactures of pet food don't have to adhere to the same standards as food for human consumption, so I guess there is the potential of some type of contamination that isn't going to be so good for you.

So you'd probably be fine, but do you want to risk it?

I'd just make my own, heaps of good recipes on the net, here is but one that I like.... http://www.latestinpaleo.com/blog/2011/3/1/latest-in-paleo-best-beef-jerky-recipe.html

Also you don't need a dehydrator, you can use an oven on a low temp, or make one out of cardboard box and a lamp. Once again Google is your friend :)

I agree it`s probably not worth the risk. Thank you for good advice :) – norwegian girl May 31 2011 at 9:23

I think those things are made to clean and strengthen dogs' teeth so they are very, very hard and would require a lot of saliva to soften them up before you could eat them.

Where did they come from? Dog chew bones made from hide tells you on the package to wash your hands after handling and "not for human consumption."
