One of Tim Feriss' big assertions in the 4 hour Body is in order to accelerate fat loss, you should consume 30 grams of protein within 30 minutes of waking. Usually, I am not hungry at all when I wake up and find it very easy to wait to eat until 11 or 12.
I know that he's controversial around here but I'm curious what the group thinks about this. To accelerate fat burning, should I eat 30 grams of protein within 30 minutes of waking up?
One thing worth noting is that it might make you wake up earlier than you want to. Seth Roberts reports that early eating has this effect; and skipping breakfast quickly erases it. His finding ended an early-waking insomnia problem that he struggled with for years.
I suggest you give it a try for two weeks. Hard boiled eggs were what I tried. I found that it resulted in me being less hungry before bed when I used to reach for chocolate and the like. I don't know what it did weight loss wise and I have not sustained it like I should have, but it did seem to have a helpful effect on my eating patterns.
I've seen that from Tim Ferris, but what I haven't seen is the science that he is using to back up the time/exact protein amount. I know the basic idea though. Essentially after a night's sleep, your body is in a catabolic state because it's processed all the food from the last meal. Since it is in a catabolic/starvation state, it tries to hold on to fat/use protein(muscle) for food. The fast digesting whey protein is to switch back to an anabolic state and get out of that starvation mode as soon as possible. Not really sure if it ramps up the metabolism, but protein's harder to digest, so possibly does it that way.
