It is peanut season down here and that means boiled peanuts, one of my favorite foods. I have gotten mixed messages about peanuts and I was wondering what people thought.

On the plus side boiled peanuts are made fresh, the green peanuts you use have to be no more then a week or two old and it is typical to see them boiled the same day next to the field they grew in (roadside stands being the usual way to get some).

On the minus they are peanuts and fairly nutrient dense.

so. good. I had them when I went to Charleston and I'm still thinking about them! – Farmer's Daughter Oct 15 2011 at 14:43

i say eat 'em if they don't make you feel bad.. but y'know, the "rule" is: No Legumes.

i haven't eaten peanuts for years b/c of pesticide levels. but babe, you only live once - eat some this week and then wait 'til next year to do it again.

nod I forgot other people don't eat legumes, I do in moderation since they don't seem to upset my body, but not terribly often. I will just lay off of the other legumes during peanut season :) – Vrimj May 31 2011 at 16:35
That sounds like a good plan! – Sara May 31 2011 at 17:18
Peanuts aren't so bad. Rice isn't so bad either. Potatoes should be alright if I don't eat the peals. Keep making changes and exceptions and before long, how Paleo are you? Really? Do you count it as a cheat or do you consider peanuts part of your 80%. Maybe if you eat more meat, vegetables and fruit, you won't feel the desire to eat the non-Paleo foods. – Curmujeon Oct 29 2011 at 13:04

complete knuckleheads. great source of fiber, antioxidants, vitamin E and cholesterol reducing fats. If you boil your own you don't have to use much salt or any at all if you prefer. Fresh boiled peanuts are sweet when not over salted.

Naughty legume eater...you're on the slippery slope to veganism... – thhq Feb 13 at 17:05

absolutely not. a big fat NO on boiled peanuts.

you are boiling way too much PUFA, damaging it for sure.

also, peanuts are still legumes, which come naturally packed with a host of unpleasant things.

See this discussion here for more info.

Hum you got me interested in the differences in processing, but I can't find anything that, in abstract form, addresses PUFA, just this ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17924703 which seems to indicate that boiling preserves more of the flavonoids and polyphenols – Vrimj May 31 2011 at 16:33
yes it can increase the flavonoids but 212 degrees and even hotter is way too much heat for a legume with 25-30% pufa. you don't need to find an article that discusses the pufa content of peanuts specifically. o6 pufa in general is fragile already, and you want to limit your intake. but the pufa cannot withstand the boiling temperature. if you eat a handful... will you die on the spot. no certainly not. no more than people will die on the spot when they eat a big piece of cheesecake or a 44oz pepsi or a bag of chips fried in corn oil. but i still give boiled peanuts a red flag, personally. – Jack Kronk May 31 2011 at 16:47

No one I know actually boils peanuts, they are usually just tossed in to a crockpot or left on warm, if you boil them, they are not sweet anymore. – Vrimj May 31 2011 at 17:07

nothing in my answer is particularly untrue. it still stands. however, i do understand where you are coming from. i have relaxed my stance of legumes. we still soak for 36 hours and crockpot them, but i don't think legumes are as bad as some would have others believe. cheers. – Jack Kronk Feb 13 at 23:07

And also they are boiled with HUGE amounts of salt to make them palatable. Down here in GA where I am from we always get them on the way to the beach, it is a bit of a tradition here. I had some yesterday but am paying for it today : (

Also in Georgia, and I'll cheat with some boiled peanuts, because damn it they are delicious. – gone2croatan May 31 2011 at 20:20
One way to cure yourself is to eat a few cold a day later, out of a used styrofoam coffee cup. – thhq Feb 13 at 17:16

I loooooove boiled peanuts. I'm glad I can't find them in New England or I'd have a hard time convincing myself out of buying them.

YAYAYAYAYAY!

I mean, they're not Paleo at all, but omg so yummy. I eat them a few times a summer. I don't particularly care for peanuts any other way and a few times a year certainly won't kill me.
