Hey all -

I recently had my sinuses cultured for some mildly chronic symptoms. My ENT said the culture was "growing a little bit of staff that's resistant to everything they tested against, so it should be easily killed off. Call the office if you want an antibiotic."

I'm very hesitant to take an antibiotic for quite a few reasons. But, since the symptoms have been chronic, I'm wondering if my body hasn't been able to kick it on it's own. Am I over thinking this? Am I missing anything? Does anyone have any experience / suggestions with fighting this off naturally?

Thanks a bunch

lots of garlic......lots of it. – The Quilt Jun 1 2011 at 1:23
I've had horrible chronic sinus problems (infections) my entire life. Paleo helped (eliminated most inflammatory foods). I hate to preach anything but the paleo gospel here on this board, but veganism completely eliminated ALL problems and more very quickly. No inflammation, no irritation, less places for those infections to take hold. I have no problem recommending a stint of veganism to anyone with respiratory problems. – Grok Jun 1 2011 at 2:40

Have you tried regular use of a neti-pot? I think some people have success with the regular salt-water, but you can kick it up a few notches by adding a couple drops of GSE. My first thought though, is that staph 'lite' is a really common bacteria and might not be the source of your trouble.. In any case, doing the neti-pot is cheap and benign.

I do use the Neil-Med Sinus rinse but not regularly. GSE? Grapseseed extract? – Todd Jun 1 2011 at 1:24
Yeah. First just get a cheap neti-pot and use regular, traditional, warm, salt-water (non-iodized), and see how that goes for a few/several days. It helps allergies too, so you can't really lose, (unless it's irritating). It's awkward, but once you get the hang and work out the salt/water ratio it can be almost pleasant. Then, if it's going ok, but you still have sinus trouble, it might be worthwhile to try the GSE. It's definitely anti-bacterial/fungal though some ppl debate it's "natural"ness. Personally, I'd try almost anything to avoid taking anti-biotics. But that's me. :) – g. Jun 1 2011 at 2:39
Fwiw, my sister kicked a long-standing sinus infection using neti. And eating less sugar... – g. Jun 1 2011 at 2:42
Thanks a bunch, I just used my sinus rinse now :) Gonna try the GSE in a few days if no progress. – Todd Jun 1 2011 at 4:20

Garlic is the antibiotic that works the best on my sinus infections. Including most of the Rx stuff.

I also will rinse, that helps too.

And it isn't totally paleo but I love mucinex to decrease the viscosity of the mucus when I do get clogged

I loved mucinex for a while. Trying not to take stuff anymore. – Todd Jun 1 2011 at 1:25
nod Not natural but I saw a MD who did complementary care for a while, he had to write me a script for it back then but said if I had to take a drug this was one of the safest choices and that regular use could keep me off antibiotics and steroids. He was right. – Vrimj Jun 1 2011 at 1:58
Awesome tidbit, thanks :) – Todd Jun 1 2011 at 4:19

One suggestion,a somewhat controversial one, is hydrogen peroxide therapy.

Another is the essential oil Helichrysum...apply 1-2 drops topically along the sides of the nose and forehead. Diffuse it in the air or add 1-2 drops in a bowl of hot water and inhale the vapors with a towel over your head. To find helichrysum try www.doterra.com

Thanks. Any good reads on the hydrogen peroxide therapy? – Todd Jun 1 2011 at 1:27

I've had the same problem. Mine is due to an allergy to something, I've been eating Paleo for about 2 years now. I am having a catscan done on Friday and allergy testing done on Monday. I've been prescribed steriods and antibiotics 4 times this year!!!! I'll let you know my outcome next week.

I've experienced the same. I've never had allergies, and seem to have developed quite a few lately. I even went into anaphylactic shock a couple weeks ago. Allergy testing next week, and declined a CT scan. Nothing prescribed yet. – Todd Jun 1 2011 at 1:07

I've never had allergy problems either until now.I tried using the netipot but it seems to aggrivate and irritate my sinuses. Pollups were found when I visited my ENT, and the problem with the netipot is the reason for the CT, just trying to make sure there is not any blockage going on. Neti-pots are supposedly fabulous, just not for me right now :)

I know it might be shunned upon, but when I had strap recently, I gladly took antibiotics. I feel that we can do the most in preventing, but when the bacterial infection is already here, it's better to just kill it off well and for good. I don't get serious infections often, as my immune system got so much better on paleo, but I teach so the kids bring crazy microbes with them ;-)
