Anyone have any thoughts as to Paleo and the potential positive effects it could have on Fibromyalgia. My girlfriend suffers from chronic pain and I was wondering if anyone out there has/had suffered from the condition and went Paleo and saw positive effects as a result?

A disease of complete metabolic energy usage. This disease is complete failure of leptin centrally, peripherally and at the hepatic level. Hard to treat but very rewarding and generally takes 18-36 months to right the ship. Lots of work involved for patient and doctor. – The Quilt Jun 1 2011 at 20:51
I have a close family member with this issue I am trying to convert. I would be interested in some abstracts I could show... or the book from the good Dr. K in the future. – MF Jun 2 2011 at 0:09

I never had a diagnosis of fibro, but spent most of my life in great pain--7 out of 10 on a perceived pain scale was my baseline, often worse. Low carb helped but when I eliminated grains and upped the fats pain went to ZERO.

Fibro is an inflammatory and auto/ immune process, Paleo can only help because it eliminates the cause.

Hi, I started my Paleo diet less than a week ago. My concerns were that as a sufferer of Fibromyalgia it may do more harm than good. I have experienced some tenderness to my left upper leg, mild/moderate. I am eager to see good results...time will tell.

It really helped a family member of mine. I wouldn't say she's eating strict Paleo, mainly she cut grains and sugar... I think she's a big fan of Mercola. Apparently it's been a huge relief for her though.

I was just reading that taking a chelated magnesium supplement can help with this. No evidence to pass on, just some casual reading. Have you tried that? I would imagine eating Paleo would naturally increase Mg levels anyway.

I started to take extra Mg much later, when I was already much better. I think it's a mixture of various things, many factors contributing. I am sure my food was richer in Mg and vit.D, which could be very important. Taking away the main toxins another. – Yoannah_offca Jun 1 2011 at 23:30

Yep. Since going paleo, I was surprised that almost all chronic pain was gone, together with the fibro fog. I had energy suddenly and started to work out. I still have over-sensitivity to touch and the trigger points, but there is no comparison, it's amazing how much it has changed! I am a new person now. ETA: joints pains and acute/random muscle pain also almost disappeared. I think I still need more time to recover after a more heavy activity than a healthy individual would, but it's really fine with me :)

Yup, elimination of wheat products and sugar will help eliminate inflammation in the body tremendously. And supplementation with Vit D3 will help a bunch also.

The Quilt who posts here wants his patients to be at 70 to 100ng/ml serum level. Can be achieved by 10,000IU Vit D3 gel caps daily for three months and then 5000IU per day thereafter.

I use Now Brand 5000IU gel caps I get from http://www.swansonsvitamins.com
