I've been talking to my mom recently about the Paleo Diet, and Primal Blueprint (even ordered her a copy of each, and a copy of Taubes' Why We Get Fat, and sent them to her house in Indiana), and she seems pretty excited about it!
I'm really pleased, as I've heard anecdotes about other people's loved ones being resistant.
I've been begging her for awhile to start exercising more, and now I think she's gonna go for it full steam, with the exercise (she got some Gillian Michael's DVD, I told her not to listen to a WORD she says about diet!) and the diet too. I also found out recently that a bunch of ladies at her knitting shop are also going to try it with her!
In fact, I just got off a speakerphone "conference call" with my mom and the knitting girls, giving them advice on where to start, what to read, good carbs vs. bad carbs, how to fast before working out, etc. It was pretty funny, and made me feel really good about being able to help!!
So, my question is this:
I am a convertee. My mum got me into it after her friend got her into it. I saw it work on them so I wanted to do it too. It is much easier to believe when your mum goes from flubby to sexy overnight and weighed less than me. I have since rectified that one.
You wanted a story:- My mum started because she wanted to look good for my brother's wedding. He had not seen her transformation and rang her up and told her in no uncertain words not to wear pants to his wedding. He was so rude about it as obviously she was an embarrassment to him. Of course she was insulted so she got him back with style and finesse.
On his wedding day she was so slim and she wore a sexy little black dress with 4 inch black heels. Ordinarily she never wears make up but that day she did. Now my mum is a stand out normally as she has german heritage and beautiful luscious long blond hair down to her tail bone. She was positively the hottest older lady there (born 1948) and could have passed as my sister and I am 40 with the same length hair BTW.
He did the bridal waltz with her and ate humble pie.
My older brother. Stubborn as hell. He has always been a terrible eater growing up. As a young boy, our mom used to make him sit at the table for hours because he wouldn't eat his green beans, or beets, or peas... you get the idea. Funny thing too... she would cave because he wouldn't. He always won.
Now, as an adult, his favorite food has long been mexican food and pizza, hands down.
So because I'm in SoCal and he's in Seattle, he didn't really know that I had overhauled my eating program back in August of last year. Well, when I posted my "Paleo Before and After" on the famous thread here on PaleoHacks, I also sent my story to my brothers and sisters.
So then he called me.
Him: Dude that's pretty cool for you. But there's no way I'll ever be able to discipline myself to eat healthy. I like to eat junk food way too much.
Me: nah man you would love what I eat.
Him: Ok so like.. what about tortillas? Can I still eat burritos?
Him: What about beans?
Him: WHAT!?^&@#&@$#%@. I hate your frickin diet man. I could never do this.
Him (again): Alright... just tell me ONE single thing I could eat or do differently. Just one.
Me: Eat real butter.
Him: Huh? Butter? Are you serious? I can do that. What else?
Me: No way man. You said one thing.
Him: Alright just one more thing. What's the MOST important thing.
Me: Don't ever cook in vegetable oils. Cook in coconut oil.
Him: What? I pop popcorn every night in Canola oil. Is that bad?
Slapping my forward (and rather than making a big deal about the popcorn) I told him to just pop it in coconut oil and that it would be delicious! He said he would. Then he asked for a third thing. I told him that I eat good quality beef, mostly steaks, about 3-4 times per week. He couldn't believe it.
Him: I can eat beef!? Alright that's it. I'm doin this.
Me: Yah man I told you. I eat like a king now.
I sent him Chris Kresser's series on Perfect Health. I sent him Kurt Harris's 12 steps. Now, for the last few weeks, we have been exchanging pictures snapped with our cell phones of food we make. He is doing fantastic! Getting grass fed beef, pasture butter, veggies, organic eggs, potatoes, bacon, coconut oil, no more vegetable oils, quality organic whole milk, and even ditched bread!!! Unbelieveable. He has a wife and 2 kids and I am so excited for them.
That's my story. It's a true one. And I'm happy as a clam about it.
i got my immediate family and a bunch of coworkers to give it a whirl. my parents- who were the most resistant- have lost a TON of weight(around 60lbs for dad and 35 for mom) since the beginning of the year. to help them stick with it, definitely talk up the paleo foods that they love and let them eat as much of it as they like- don't get too deep with the macronutrients with them initially except just to have them lay off the fruit just a bit. for example, my dad has been deprived of pork for years. now he is thrilled that he can eat pigfeet and neckbones to his heart's desire and lose tons of weight that he's struggled to get rid. as far as my mom goes, i've let her eat greek yogurt in the morning since she's not a huge meat eater. that pretty much assuages her sweet tooth and takes the edge off. i guess my advice is just to meet the newly converted where they are. there are many paleo ways to skin the cat.
My brother. He was following a conversation between me, my husband and a young diabetic friend who has adopted our diet and reduced his insulin from 60 units a day to about 10, and is hoping to be able to ditch it all together eventually. My brother began asking me questions, and the next thing I knew he was shopping farmer's markets, sourcing grass-fed beef and raw milk, and reading The Primal Blueprint. It was amazing and gratifying.
My second proudest moment is when my 16-year-old came back from visiting his father in Texas over Spring break and announced that he made his dad sit down and watch Fat Head on Netflix.
I helped convert one of my dear girlfriends- she was hoping it would help with her PCOS, and she's doing great. She told me she feels more on an even keel, her tummy feels better from avoiding gluten, and she's even lost some weight. To top it off, she's as enthusuastic as I am, which I LOVE because now I have someone to talk paleo with, haha. She is super stoked about her new lifestyle, and I'm so glad for her. Other than peanut butter & Gatorade, I've pretty much converted my boyfriend too, but he's not all that interested in the nuts & bolts.
My mom has been overweight my whole life. We're actually right at the same weight right now which is one of the things that's kicked me into gear regarding my own weight loss. I always had the excuse "at least I'm not as fat as my mom." She's shorter than me by about 6" so should weigh less than me too.
I'm hoping that if I succeed with this, I will get her in on it, my dad too. He's been "vegetarian" for about 12 years, but he eats SO MANY CARBS. He has a nice beer gut, and its the bad, hard fat too.
I think your success should show them that it works!
