I bought nori too, thinking that it will provide a good source of iodine. Turns out it doesn't have much iodine (but still a good source of phytochemical and convenient way to wrap up foods in, no doubt). Kelp and dulse are much more rich in iodine, so I started using kelp granules instead. – Andy Jun 5 2011 at 20:26

Seaweed is pretty abundant here and easily accessible. Nori I use as a bread substitute at times or as a snack alternative to potato chips, but I eat laver/brown seaweed and other types often too. It's an easy snack to pick up and have between classes instead of the cakes that sit on the kitchen counter at work. – MimsySeoul Jun 6 2011 at 2:25

eggs, butter, thick-cut bacon, green veggies, and tie between dubliner cheddar and berries (mostly for my kids who are half fruit-bat).

believe it or not, all of my top five things need to be bought at five different stores. FML. i dont list coconut milk, beef, lamb, pork, coconut oil because i buy them in bulk once a year or so and keep them in the basement, but we do go through quite a bit of those things. i guess i also go through a fair amount of heavy cream since i make it into yogurt. thats at store #6. ugh.

Ok, this is serious biz. I had to go for a second grocery round yesterday because I ran out of my leafy greens and a chick in line said I seemed so heartbroken that I didn't grab another bunch "just in case" that she offered to hold my basket AND place in line. Zoinks! I'm a nerd for my veg apparently.

  • Beef
  • Fruit
  • Greens - 2lbs a week! Seriously.
  • Fermented veg
  • Tubers/sweet potatoes - combining as they both are dirty and kinda the same shape
  • Sheep yogurt

  1. Beef. Local, grassfed, humane, not frozen, from a local butcher who specializes in such meats. http://www.thepiggery.net
  2. Butter. Also local and grassfed. I get this at Wegmans.
  3. Cream. For my coffee, sometimes for sauces. This comes from the co-op
  4. Greens. Various leafy things. For both myself and my tortoise to eat.
  5. Coffee. Organic, fair trade, roasted locally. I have two place in town (Ithaca, NY) that make this. One sells at Wegmans, the other in a coffeeshop I drive by on my way to/from work.

I think I live in a great place to eat Paleo. I might have to go to three stores each week, but they are all very convenient. In the summer there is a fabulous farmers market full of seasonal veggies, fruits and lots of different frozen meats

As I look at my list I see that eggs are missing. Maybe they should have been #5, but I have coffee daily, not eggs. When I need them I can pick them up at The Piggery, the co-op, or from a co-worker who has a flock of organic/lawn fed chickens.

There are veggies of course, lots and lots of veggies, but I think they'd warrant their own top five list.
