I've eaten them every morning for years cooked with lots of lard and/or beef tallow and with wonderful results. I can coast for many hours without getting hungry...my blood sugar doesn't drop. I remain very sated. I prepare them based on the soaking/basic beans method in Nourishing Traditions. I then steam them for a couple of more hours with the lard or tallow. I don't get any gas from them. Cooking beans with a piece of raw, peeled ginger helps to eliminate the gas factor.

I have HUGE digestion issues with any sort of bean. I don't go near them.

I'm pretty sure there is no paleo faction that considers these to be acceptable which is fine by me.

Many SAD Nutritionists/Dieticians want you to believe that a bit of gas and bloating when first eating beans is normal, and that you'll eventually acclimate to them if you keep stuffing yourself with them. (What the heck kind of sick mindset is that, anyway?! "It'll hurt like the dickens at first, but plod through, mate! It's worth it!" >.<)

For me, that could not be further from the truth. I could never fully digest beans, even after being a vegetarian for several years and relying on almost exclusively for protein. Can you tell that my veggie years were absolute misery? Ugh.

I don't touch them now. I don't crave them or miss them or the pain associated with eating them. I'm much happier eating a dead animal of some sort for protein. :)

No reason at all to feel bad about not eating something that causes you so much discomfort. Isn't that what Paleo is about. Some people never figure out the things bother their bodies. Went to a chili cook off today. Mine was the only beanless entry. 3# of grassfed, bunch of fresh tomatoes, zuccini and peppers(jalos and bells). Tasted the 7 others and I'm suffering for it! Probably take a week to clear the junk from my system. – Curmujeon Oct 16 2011 at 2:52

No real digestion issues, just joint and muscle pain and stiffness. – Curmujeon Oct 16 2011 at 2:54
Thanks, Curmujeon. Your chili recipe sounds delicious! I'd love a copy, if it's not top secret. ;D I hope you feel better soon! – Kaz Oct 16 2011 at 4:26

i dont eat them. too carby. i dont have the same belly issues a lot of people have, but we mostly soak 'em. i really really miss refried black beans with jalapenos and cumin with lots of cilantro, diced onions and queso fresco on a corn tortilla. i do miss that.... it hardly interferes with my daily functioning though. im living fine without them, and probably better.

Before Paleo, I was the Black Bean Queen! I made black bean brownies, black bean soup, chicken salad with black beans thrown it. Low fat / high fiber! What could be better!

I had no issues with digestion or gas/bloating when eating them, but they may have had a lot to do with my water retention issues. I have completely cut them out now and don't really miss them.

same here! they dont affect me badly at all. they never gave me gas or abdominal bloat, etc. i never got headaches from eating them either. I guess now i just avoid them for ideological reasons (they're not paleo bc they have a more damaging lectin content than most foods). – cloudsinskies Jun 6 2011 at 22:35

I do not want to share my reaction to them. It's not something I discuss in polite company. I would not eat black beans or any other kind of beans (except maybe green beans). Nasty stuff.

I love them and never had issues with them but they gave my husband terrible digestion issues. Even though I'd soak them overnight. I occaisionally miss them but they're just too Carby for me and I always tended to over eat them.

I don't normally eat them since going paleo, and they've always caused gas pains and heartburn, so I haven't missed them.

But I had a bowl of beans and rice the other day and had no trouble at all.

I'm wondering if eating paleo and taking my probiotics has made it easier for my stomach to handle things it didn't tolerate before.

I've always not felt well after eating any beans. I didn't eat them even when I was WAP, still don't eat them.

I have them no more then once a month. I like animal protein far better then any bean!

I had no issues with any sort of bean and continue to have no issues despite not eating them but very occasionally. Not 'kosher' paleo, but not the worst thing ever either. Don't make them a staple in your diet, but an occasional serving isn't terrible.
