I've lost about 100 lbs (last 50 or so Paleo/Primal---Fairly strict) over the last 2 years and 3 months. Has anyone else who has lost a lot of weight experienced shrinking pains, around the rib cage especially? Is this normal? Does it go away?
I agree with the above, I've lost 115 in 10 months and have not experienced any pains. In fact, I feel better (easily breathing, energy, comfort, etc) than I ever remember feeling in my life.
Congrats - I would suggest talking to a medical professional...
First, congratulations on a job well done!
I've also lost 100+ and had no pains at all. I've actually never heard of anyone having anything akin to "shrinking pains." It's probably nothing but I agree you should go get checked out just to be on the safe side.
It sounds to me like you have trigger points and adhesions in your soft tissue. Go see a Neuromuscular therapist, Structural integrationist, or Thai Massage therapist about getting you out of pain and normalizing your neuromuscular system. This is common in weight loss cases since weight distribution and body stresses change so much. Soft tissue manipulation is the most effective, safest, and cheapest solution to somatic pain. A M.D. will just give you antiinflammatories and muscle relaxers.
More information would also help. When does it hurt, what movements hurt it, etc.
I found my best remedy was more water, added Omega-3, and Some good backstretches. Plus I agree with the Thai Massage comment.
When I started loosing my weight, I had pain that wrapped around mid back right under the right rib cage, and it was even worse if I was jogging. After a few weeks, my pains went away. Whatever shifted finally did, or whatever was swollen finally shrunk. When I was jogging it was a good 8 out of 10 pain scale, it was almost like my gall bladder or liver was bouncing around in there while I was jogging. A buddy of mine that lost more weight said his internals hurt as it seemed things started to shift around. But it also went away.
