most of the sweeteners you list are good, although I confess I don't know what lucuma is.

obviously, with the options like honey, syrup, molasses... these are still high in sugar, and therefore should be treated accordingly.

I use pure stevia powder to sweeten coffee and a little in my PWO drink, but I use such a teensie tiny amount of it (one serving size is 1/32 tsp) that I really don't think it's even possible to be a problem, especially since there are no known ill-effects (I do remember someone on PH saying that it had an effect on their blood pressure though...)

We use honey rarely and my husband uses Stevia now after we read Mark Sisson's blog post about it because he's diabetic and according to Mark, Stevia is a good choice. Here is a link to that if you want to read it. link text

Raw Honey and Maple Syrup are the best for you. I would skip the "sugar subsitutes like Stevia and malitol, etc, better to just use sugar.

Like Jack I use stevia daily in very small quantities. The others I use very rarely usually in baked goods or other occasional treats that I personally need to make my life worth living (and keep me on the straight and narrow with my food.) Perhaps not the best choice viewed in isolation but the perfect choice when taking in the 30,000 ft view.

I say go ahead throw a big blog of honey on something and enjoy the heck out of it if it will make you happy and keep you from cracking. In the end I think usage of these sweeteners is personal choice but IMO if used strategically they can be a powerful tool to keep us in the game.

Wow, people really don't like this answer...Here's my reasoning: all sweet things are either glucose (not that bad) or fructose (really bad) - it doesn't matter if it's natural or not. Honey, Agave, Grade A Maple Syrup - lots of fructose. Grade B Maple Syrup - less fructose. Sugar alcohols, all turn into sugars in your blood. Non-sugar sweeteners still cause a pavlovian insulin response when you taste the sweet. Just try to get used to eating stuff without a sweetener, you'll get used to it rather quickly - I did and was a massive sweet tooth before paleo. – miked Jun 7 2011 at 15:13
So fruit will kill me? – BeastGirl Jun 29 2011 at 19:30

I think so! Granted, eating fructose in the presence of the fiber that's in fruit slows down the impact on the liver, but I still stay away from most fruits and only have very small amounts as treats. – miked Jun 29 2011 at 21:20
