I started doing some research this morning and shared a few links on the AHS Meetup Facebook page Anyone know of any good places near UCLA? Umami Burger, Blue Plate, Father's Office, Kate Mantilini, Shamshiri Grill looked like contenders to me, but I live in Southern MD and I don't know much about the LA restaurant scene. Any suggestions or thoughts on the places listed would be greatly appreciated! :)

Like any good paleohacker I eat almost all home cooked food, however I'll chime in on some places I do like to eat at.... My favorite sushi, hands down, is Sushi Park. It's on sunset in west hollywood in a very unassuming spot. Never disappoints, and the funny thing is they have a sign on the door that says 'no take out, no cooked food, no california rolls". Ha. They are extremely nice though. There is a great argentine place called Carlitos Gardel on melrose in hollywood that has great meats, I usually go there for the sweetbreads (thymus). Father's Office has a damn tasty burger (it's a bar) Umami Burger is semi-fast food, I've never had it though people seem to really like it In Santa Monica there is a fantastic french restaurant called La Cachette Bistro that always is delicious. I'm not a big fan of Kate Mantillini If you like Indian there are some fantastic places, my favorite being Anarkali (on melrose in hollywood) The restaurant at Chateau Marmont is a bit trendy, but the food is really really good. I may add in some more as I think of them... |

The Counter is a good burger joint about 1.5 miles from UCLA. Pick your meat (beef, turkey, and sometimes lamb), your weight (1/3, 2/3, 1 lb), your toppings (dozens), your cheese (fifteen or so), and your sauce (i go with balsamic and olive oil). Most people do buns, but they also serve the meat in bowls of salad greens. Pretty reasonable, pretty tasty. I believe they use local meat and ingredients, though I doubt it's purely grass-fed. Manpuku is amazing. Grill in the center of the table. Raw slivers of various beef cuts, organs, tongue, pork belly brought out on platters to be grilled at the table. Grab the seaweed salad and a bowl of white rice if you're into that. About half a mile from UCLA. |
