Help! Just home from a month away. Long story, but basically just lived out of a hotel during an incredibly stressful family emergency and am home today. Checked my stats and I'm up nearly 8 pounds and an inch around my midline. Tried to stay paleo while away but had a ton of stress, crappy sleep, little exercise, and limited food choice so ended up eating (and drinking) way more carb than I have in months.
Now that I'm home and have total control, I'm considering some kind of grass-fed beef mono-diet. What would you do? Has this happened to you and how long has it taken you to get back to "normal"? I've leaned out over the past 6 months from 185 to 160 - now back up close to 170.
Any advice on some kind of shock and awe strategy appreciated.
First of all, RELAX, you've done it before, you will do it again.
I bet up to 5lbs of that could be water related because if you were eating carbs (especially grain based carbs) then your body is reacting to them.
Just go back to your normal Paleo eating, with maybe a few tweaks. You could IF if you are comfortable with that. Throw in an extra HIIT or sprinting workout. Drop the calories if you do that. I know we've talked ratios before, I would stick with what was working for you before as far as that goes.
After Xmas, I was up 10lbs. I lost it in two weeks because a lot of it was water and then my body was just happy when I went back to my normal eating / workout schedule.
Salt and carbs are great at retaining water. Most of the problem comes from water retention from sodium and excess carb intake so it's not necessary to go to extremes and do zero carb. Going back to paleo (sans excess starches, fruits and nuts) is enough of a "shock and awe" for your body.
I find the most helpful things for me to do is:
I'm not sure which one of these methods is the main reason why I'm losing weight or if it's a combination of all of the above, but there's been a number of times I've been led astray and I was always lucky enough to bounce back to my old weight in one or two weeks time following this regimen.
Update us on what you did to drop back to your old weight and watch out for the low carb flu. I hate that part!!
I would just try to make a quick return to normal. You have been faced with a complete upheaval in your habits and just by returning to your customary routine you should be able to shed that quickly.
Get plenty of sleep, eat well, and do what you do normally and I'm sure within a few weeks you'll be back to the point you left off. Besides, I'm sure you body is going to love the return!
The aproach outlined here (Look under Fat Loss):
It may seem a bit strange (for example lean meats). however I did this same kind of thing (3 days straight in any given week) and it melts pounds like crazy...
