I use Scivation Xtend and 200mg of caffeine now pre-workout.

Going to switch to Purple Wraath and 200 mg of caffeine soon.

Anyone take BCAA tablets or use purple wraath?

I've been taking 5mg BCAA fasted pre-workout in the morning (along with some coffee or tea) and feel like it definitely helps my workouts. Right now I'm pretty much VLC Primal (eating cheese and other high-fat low sugar dairy) and have also noticed that BCAA seems to knock down the overall hunger/carb-cravings (likely due to gluconeogenesis).

I save the whey and/or casein (from dairy) for post workout as it has been shown to promote a positive nitrogen balance in numerous studies.

Bodybuilding.com has a pure BCAA powder by SciFit (what I bought) and it is a huge 2lb jug that was pretty cheap. They typically have prices about 50% off what you would find at GNC or any other brick-and-mortar store.

How's the SciFit mix? – Todd Jun 9 2011 at 2:23
Tastes like hell, but it's cheap and has been working well for me. – FED at LiveCaveman.com Jun 9 2011 at 16:42

It's worth mentioning that it is PURE bcaa, so the nasty taste is worth avoiding any sweeteners, colors, etc. IMHO. – FED at LiveCaveman.com Jun 9 2011 at 16:43
Check out www.truprotein.com. You can save about twenty dollars on your 2 lbs., compared to the SciFit. In the supplements list, scroll on down past the BCAA Boost and BCAA Plus, to the one listed as "Branch Chain Amino Acids INSTANTIZED." Same nasty taste, but much nicer price. – Hilary Sep 3 2011 at 20:21

I just popped some BCAAs right before I clicked on Paleohacks. I take NSI from Vitacost just for cost reasons and they dont have additives. Now off to deadlifts, squatzzz, power cleeeans!!

I use BCAAs(Xtend), although I'm not planning on getting another container when I run out. I definitely notice an increase in energy, and my lifts, when I'm supplementing with BCAAs, both when I train fasted and not. I'm also doing keto right now, and I feel that BCAAs are very helpful on keto, but with carbs, I feel that the BCAAs don't help as much.

I'm planning on just taking a 21g of protein whey shake pre-workout, just to supply AAs during the workout. I've done it before with similar results to BCAAs.

I have heard that as well. A whey shake is definitely more cost friendly. – Dave Jun 8 2011 at 23:19

i have been using Scivation Extend and No doze plus, fasted pre workout for a year now aka leangains and have noticed that i have more focus and energy.

i would recommend it for any metcon's as training fasted would give you some serious prowler flu.

currently im using purple wrath and 150 mg caffeine and have noticed that after 30 min my whole body startes tingling and my skin feels like its a bout to break out in a rash. i have been taking normal doses but i guess everyone is different.

all in all i rate Scivation as being my pic for BCAA's

I had the same reaction. I'm fairly sure it's the beta-alinine in the purple wrath. Extend does not have it from what I remember. – Todd Jun 9 2011 at 2:22
It's the beta-alinine. – hemanvt Sep 3 2011 at 11:08

I thought the purple wrath tasted disgusting. Xtend tastes much better but has AceK and Splenda in it. I take capsules now.

I see a lot of people using Xtend pre workout. I have always used it as recommended, intra workout. I have used Jack3d pre workout and it didnt help me much but did make my stomach hurt. I stopped using Xtend when I went Paleo due to the sweeteners but I may add it back in. I did notice a difference using it during a workout.

I take twin labs BCAA tablets as soon as I wake up with a glass of water, then with every meal.

I take one serving, four scoops, of scivation pre workout. This is NOT in a fasted state btw.

I've wondered about beta alanine though. I know some mixes have it, and some people dislike it cuz it makes your feel "tingly." I'd love to hear from users.

I like the scivation, feel like I get a little buzz of energy. Fake sugar sucks but it's such a small amount, it's worth it.

Beta alanine made me feel like I was on fire from the inside out. I used it once and was so scared of that feeling, I immediately took it back. – Todd Jun 9 2011 at 3:09
thanks. yeah, weird feelings like that tend to freak me out, too. Remember the first time i smoked weed and I got pretty scared:) Was the BA you took in a BCAA or some other mix or was it just straight BA in a pill or something? – ben61820 Jun 10 2011 at 12:26

The best way to utilize BCAAs is pre-workout to preserve muscle mass, especially on a calorie restricted or low-carb diet. For example you could try, green tea and BCAAs on and empty stomach before a morning run, walk, or some resistance training?

Since when? And also not relevant to the OP's question. – Joshua Feb 13 2012 at 19:49
