What do you take if anything before going to the gym/box. I always go shortly after I wake up. Was taking 10mg BCAA in form of Xtend via Leangains. Also take 200mg caffeine. Switching to Purple Wraath for Beta-Alinine. What about arginine or dimethylamyaline or creatine?

What's your cocktail?

I think you got it covered bro. BCAA, caffeine, and creatine and you should be good to go.

Should you be taking creatine pre-workout or post workout? – JakeA Jun 10 2011 at 11:49
The overall levels of creatine stored in your muscles are more important than a pre/post workout dose. A week long loading phase (15-20 gms per day spread out into 5gm doses) will get your levels up, at which time you can move to a maintenance phase (5-10gms/day) for another month or so. It is a good idea to take supplements, even creatine, in phases so that you allow your body to adjust and to maintain normal synthesis pathways. – FED at LiveCaveman.com Jun 10 2011 at 12:14
i do creatine daily, but when i started i skipped the whole loading phase. I've simply always done the 3 grams/day serving. Takes a wee more time but I feared the possible stomach issues from loading. Can do it either way. On lifting days I take my creatine post-workout but I don't see it as a game changer either way. – ben61820 Jun 10 2011 at 12:41
You can definitely skip the loading phase but, like ben said, it takes a while longer to get the "pool" of creatine in the muscles up. If you have stomach/bloating issues with creatine (I always used micronized and never had any problems loading) a "low and slow" buildup is a perfectly good option. – FED at LiveCaveman.com Jun 10 2011 at 13:01
I've always done micronized Creapure, too. Still use hot water to dissolve it though. With a plain old 3 grams daily I've never bad any bloat or whatever. Think a lot of dudes just aren't patient and down like 10 or 20 grams and then run to the bathroom. – ben61820 Jun 10 2011 at 17:43

BCAA and creatine are both substances normally found in meat. If someone is fasting, and still wanting to work out (presumably at a reasonably high intensity based on the original question) I think that it is smart to make use of quality supplements. – FED at LiveCaveman.com Jun 10 2011 at 12:11
I'd have to go with FED, here. Yes, you CAN do it sans-supplementation but if you are going for big gains, heavy loads, why not choose to simply give yourself every possible aid available? – ben61820 Jun 10 2011 at 12:40
Why? Cuz I get those WITHOUT that garbage. Don't quote me, but that Xtend (sounds like a penile lengthening infomercial) and Purple Wraath (LOL seriously?) have artificial sweeteners like splenda and/or aspartame. Not a big fan of putting DDT/fecal matter from e coli in my body. – L. Peltier Jun 10 2011 at 15:37

Small amounts yes. Bit of aspartame etc in a supplement is not going to harm an otherwise very fit healthy, lifting body. If you roll hardcore without any supp good for you, that's awesome. I used to, too. But some of us like using something to just make us feel more able, pumped whatever. I just don't see ANY harm from that little bit, if the taker is a healthy fit paleo individual. – ben61820 Jun 10 2011 at 17:41

What do you guys say around here...."the poison is in the dose"? I'm really starting to see what I would call a bunch of "arm-chair paleos". Very cerebral....on paper. – L. Peltier Jun 10 2011 at 18:57

I might start a separate thread because I have some other very specific questions, but what about MCT oil? I got the idea of supplementing with pharmaceutical grade MCT oil from Dave Aspry's Bulletproof Fasting (bulletproof coffee, bulletproof diet, etc.).

The thing that makes me most hesitant about employing MCT oil before a workout is the fear that any fat whatsoever pre-workout will blunt the hugely important GH surge, which is a huge benefit of fasted training to begin with. http://www.theiflife.com/reasons-why-you-should-workout-fasted/

So to MCT oil or not to MCT oil? That is my question.

Martin Berkhan states that any intake over 50cals will likely break you're fast and diminish the benefits of training fasted - maybe wanna save the MCT til after the workout – Bilge Aug 18 at 1:38
Thanks Bilge, if I value anyone's advice about fasted training, it's probably his. I guess I'll stick with his 10g of BCAA protocol + the manditory 5 hour energy before working out. – Primal NOLA Aug 20 at 6:13
