I've been trying to follow a strict paleo diet for months, however would like to enjoy a glass of wine a few times per week. The problem is that when I slip up and drink too much, my diet is ruined the next day. Usually I feel tired and want to eat all day long, but of course only after a night of alcohol overindulgence. Does anyone have a scientific explanation of why the happens? How to prevent this is obvious, I'm just wondering if a different alcohol choice, like tequila, would be bettet? My body seems to have gotten more sensitive to red wine. Thanks.

Dude - I'm bummed about how wine kills me now. I live for red wine but since paleo, I get the nastiest hangovers. I found that a French pinot is the only wine that doesn't leave me wrecked the next morning. – baconbitch Jun 10 2011 at 0:50
Luckily, I'm somehow magically impervious to the negative effects of red wine. I definitely used to have a higher tolerance though. Before paleo, I could put back a bottle or two and be fine the next day. Now, a glass gets me happily tipsy and two glasses has me feeling real good. :) – lunabelle Jun 10 2011 at 3:45
I should add that I did used to binge out after drinking and it was somewhat problematic for me, blood sugar-wise. Since I've started IF, I only drink a glass before 8pm and then fast until 12pm the next day, consuming only water and herbal tea. I think this REALLY helps. I just power through the PM "munchies" and sleep it off. – lunabelle Jun 10 2011 at 3:58
it's probably because of the sugars in the wine. your body is craving the sugar crack the next day. I'd drink tequila personally, but then again I hate wine. – Leanne Jun 10 2011 at 5:02

Vodka is a good choice. If you are worried about the carbs, just do what I do: more bong hits.

Mei-ling. I've been missing you my mei mei. Where have you been? Are you in H-K yet? – Thomas Seay Jun 10 2011 at 16:43

I recently drank more than ever before in my life while in Poland. A Polish gothic wedding reception. Just vodka shots, water or fruit juice chasers, and food. Felt fine the next morning! – sean Jun 10 2011 at 21:20

Robb Wolf's norcal margaritas are great and I never get a headache or feel like crap the next day like I do with wine. http://paleoblocks.blogspot.com/2009/10/recipe-robb-wolfs-nor-cal-margaritas.html

Totally trying that with rum. Tequila makes me hit people :) – baconbitch Jun 10 2011 at 0:53
Thanks for all your comments. I will definitely try some good tequila, soda, and lime. Does anyone have the scientific reasoning behind the sensitivity to alcohol when on paleo? – rsteel Jun 10 2011 at 3:14
I have tried it with Gin and love it! Robb says that you should try to stick with a clear liquor. Not sure about the science part, but I know that I react to the sugar and sulfites in alcohol. – Liesl Jun 10 2011 at 11:27
The color in alcohol is a result of impurities in it. The more clear the alcohol, the "cleaner" it is. It also is less likely to give you a hangover, and its easier on your liver. This is why "professional alcoholics" all drink vodka and the like. If they drank that much whiskey it'd kill em' – TomInTexas Jun 10 2011 at 16:30
The color in liquor is due to barrel aging. Whiskey starts out clear, then they put it in a barrel to age. That's how it develops color. Sometimes caramel is added to color a spirit, but generally speaking, particularly with good whiskey, it's a barrel! – tartare Jun 10 2011 at 23:18

I definitely do my share of drinking as a bartender. I used to knock em back, but I have seriously chilled way wayyy back on it for awhile.

I find now that all alcohol makes me stuffy, and makes me gain weight/fat (probably just bloating and water weight, but it sucks nonetheless!)

If I drink I usually try to stick to potato vodka, wine or champagne, brandy or tequila and sometimes cider. Of course at the end of the night, most of the rules fly out the window.

What's your favorite drink? Don't give me the clean Paleo drink, give me the one you REALLY REALLY like. I want to try it. – Thomas Seay Jun 10 2011 at 2:59
I'm not all that fancy when it comes to drinking. I like to build new drinks, and riff on classics, but for myself, simplicity is the best. I honestly used to drink the heck outta Bud Light. I know right? But seriously, summertime, you can't beat a highball of Lillet and soda on ice, or a pastis like Ricard or Pernod, diluted with icy cold spring water. During the winter months I really like Barenfangs (Barenjager is one most people might've hard of...it's a honey liqueur) and Fernet Branca. Don't even get me started on Fernet. – Futureboy Jun 10 2011 at 19:49
Back when I drank ALOT, I would always kick the hangover with a Fernet and Coke if I could. It's rumored that European Fernet still has opium in it...which I tend not to believe, but hey, it's romantic. – Futureboy Jun 10 2011 at 19:50

Wine screwed up my blood sugar really bad. I drink Vodka now with seltzer water and lime. Very refreshing on a hot day!

I try to stick with low carb beer: Michelin Ultra or Bud 55.

Ever tried Bard's? It's made from Sorghum, and it's a little watery, but for a zero gluten beer it's pretty good, nicely malty and easy-drinking like an American lager. DEFINITELY a summer beer though. – Futureboy Jun 10 2011 at 2:22
I have tried Bards, but they are really high in carbohydrate and they cause me to have huge carb cravings. – Baglady Jun 11 2011 at 11:47

I find that drinking good tequila is the best for me, no hangover, and I do not seem to have more cravings with it, I buy sipping tequila and only have one decent shot and take my time sipping it. Wine, not so good, can destroy my diet in a flash. Potato vodka is good too with mineral water and a slice of orange.

I will say Bards is pretty good too.

My new found drink of choice is 3 parts tequila, 2 parts grand marnier, and 1 lime worth of juice. Shaken with ice. Its so good, so strong, and I didn't feel like crap the next morning.
