Its going to last 29 days. I can only take what I can carry in a ruck sack (although I will not be carrying that ruck into the field, so think of it more as like a carry on bag). Paleo food provided will be some mixed salad maybe once a day, the occasional eggs for breakfast, and some fruit.

Definitely a very wise ass way to start a pretty complicated question. But, I'm going to try to eat as strictly as possible since I am training up for a selection in september.

my current thoughts are: -Lots of fish oil (maybe double the daily dosage to help off set inflammation from stress/lack of sleep/ inevitable poor eating) -Paleo kits and beef jerky a plenty -packaged tuna/canned sardines (both should survive that long with the fort bragg heat) -take a bottle of olive oil so i can do some olive oil shots with meals -tree nuts. I eat them rarely in an attempt to keep my omega 6's low, but they'll probably be a staple for this extended camping trip -hunting. not reliable, encouraged, or really allowed (but ill see what i can pull off with some snares) -bluebonnet makes a gluten and soy free whey protein. Its an easy way to get a lot of calories without taking up much space http://www.iherb.com/Bluebonnet-Nutrition-Whey-Protein-Isolate-Natural-Chocolate-Flavor-2-lb-924-g/15912?utm_source=shc&utm_medium=c&=ppnshpng&at=0

I lived on tuna packets, shitty salad bar, and lots of almonds for a year in a iraq. so im not worried about

Get/make a heap of pemmican. Contains everything you need, can live on it for ever, doesn't require refrigeration and lasts years. And tastes yummy.

Or Google The PEMMICAN Manual by. Lex Rooker

I agree that pemmican makes the most sense in this situation. – henny May 8 2010 at 14:24
Pemmican is the way to go. The Lex Rooker method produces great pemmican which will last for months. – pfw May 8 2010 at 14:41
The pemmican from US Wellness meats is excellent. And you can get it in bar form. – Aaron Griffin May 10 2010 at 14:52

As a regular backpacker, I have this question down. Here are some things I typically take:

  • Beef jerky (home made)
  • Hard boiled eggs - just throw them in a ziplock bag. Might not last too long
  • An apple - I always bring one
  • Pemmican - You can make a stew out of it and the jerky!
  • Pouches of tuna and salmon
  • Custom GORP - almonds, raisins, blueberries, macadamia nuts, etc

That usually lasts me for a few days. If I was going longer, I would add some more variety in there, but I'm drawing a blank right now. Look into early US history for some good ideas in terms of wilderness food.

I just came back from a backpacking trip, and I put my food up on my website. It worked out really well. This is the second time I've left the stove at home.

The Wilderness Family Naturals powdered coconut milk was awesome.

Don't forget the coconut Milk

Coconut milk isn't strictly paleo. It requires heating, blending, and straining. – Aaron Griffin May 10 2010 at 14:47

How well and how long will it keep without refridgeration

Properly made pemmican will last a year or more and doesn't require any refrigeration. See Lex Rooker's manual: traditionaltx.us/images/PEMMICAN.pdf – Alan May 10 2010 at 11:57
