I've heard some people say they don't like this particular brand. Why? I tried it and found it to be fine. If you are one of these people, what brand do you get? I've heard good things about nutiva, but I'm not thrilled about the plastic container.
FWIW I "liked" Nutiva on Facebook, but found they're implicitly promoting veganism all the time (always/only promoting vegan or vegetarian recipes, for example). I just "unliked" them the other day! But I still use their product. Even for cooking I like unrefined coconut oil.
Some people (both me and my husband) find that Spectrum has a kind of metallic flavor. I've seen on numerous Real Food sites that others have the same issue with Spectrum. However, my parents recently bought me a huge tube of Wilderness Family Naturals refined coconut oil, and that has a very slight metallic tang to it too, so it may have something to do with the refining process and not the specific brand. Some people don't notice any flavor to it, so I'd recommend buying a small jar first, and if you like it, then get a big tub.
I mainly use virgin coconut oil because I like the flavor and health benefits, but I keep refined for my deep fryer and for moisturizer (seems to work better than virgin as a moisturizer).
FWIW, a scoop of virgin in a pot of refined seems to negate the nasty flavor.
Might as well order bulk from Tropical Traditions. Much better than spectrum. It's 100% authentic, no machines involved. They sell grass fed beef and stuff, so they seem to be paleo friendly as well. = )
i don't like spectrum because they do not seem to give a flip about what they market. if a company sells coconut oil and promotes it as an excellent cooking oil, then they must believe that saturated fat is not unhealthy for you. so why then, are they also one of the largest brands of omega6 laden oils in the world? they sell TONS of seed oils. soybean, corn, safflower, canola... the whole gamut. as far as i'm concerned, they are part of the problem.
look at their oils page... http://www.spectrumorganics.com/?id=6
somethin ain't right with that.
