There was a great discussion started by The Quilt about our general thoughts on Paleo. It got me thinking about my own self-experimentation and how difficult it is to find women-centric forums that cull our N=1 experiments such as CureTogether.

I'm about to embark on a new experiment for myself and wondering if anyone has recommendations for technology coupled with forums that match the social data to individual data. For instance, I want to know how other women are eating and exercising and what they've discovered works best for them. In searching for an answer here (which I did not find) The Quilt brought up another great question about culling N1 data.

My goal in this question: 1. Find a social site that will track self-experiments in diet and exercise and offer suggestions on how to improve the data based on the memebers' data.

I would LOVE a site that has the social aspect of PaleoHacks (the intelligence and inquisitiveness here is awesome) coupled with the tracking of CureTogether.

I'm not sure if such a site exists, but think it's a great idea. I also agree that women and also different ethnicities will need to tinker with different aspects of diet and strength for optimization. Are you looking to compile data here or elsewhere? – smartcookie Jun 13 2011 at 15:01

Cure together is super sophisticated but if you are just looking for questions with a few calculations on the backend I have done stuff like that with a google form that has a backend spreadsheet. It is at least a way to get good baseline data and the URL or email sharing is super easy and doesn't take another registration process. – Vrimj Jun 13 2011 at 16:17

Count me in! Not exactly what you're looking for, but Seth Roberts's forum is all about self-experimentation and he compiles and analyzes everyone's data as well as his own there, but it's mostly specific to the Shangri-La Diet: forums.sethroberts.net – Gazelle Jun 13 2011 at 16:35

Ok, I just checked out curetogether and it seems pretty great. So, you're thinking something similar for paleo women? I think one of the cool things about your idea is its more preventative/life optimizing than "treating." Google groups might be an easy start. I bet we could all pitch in with the statistics or calculations. – smartcookie Jun 13 2011 at 17:06

Check out fatsecret.com too. I don't know much about it but it has several paleo groups with data tracked... – Gazelle Jun 13 2011 at 17:14

i use the unfortunately-named fatsecret.com to keep track of what i'm eating, workouts, etc. you can see other user's diets, depending on their settings. i'm not sure there is an easy way to see data across a whole group of people on the site, but it might be worth looking into!

I'm a woman and made a few blog posts about paleo and crossfitting on my blog: http://www.aliciablogs.com/2011/06/information-paleo-foods/ http://www.aliciablogs.com/2011/06/paleo-challenge-results-addiction/ http://www.aliciablogs.com/2011/03/introduction-crossfit/

There is other groups I belong to that aren't soley felmales but have quite a few of them: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_170353216345440&ap=1 http://www.facebook.com/StrongIsTheNewSkinny http://www.facebook.com/pages/CROSSFIT-GIRLS-ARE-NOT-ONLY-HOT-THEY-KICK-ASS3/251413487890

Hope that helps :)

I love this idea...I am always experimenting on myself, and this is definitely the most like minded site I have found. Maybe you need to create this BB! If you do find something, I would love to hear about it...I have no patience for sparkspeople type sites.

Yeah, I've been trolling around there this morning and SP just feels like a place for Slim Fast drinking folks. Plus it's just to "busy". – baconbitch Jun 13 2011 at 18:51

Looks like I may go with Google using the spreadsheet function coupled with an AJAX API

I found a great script here and will see what I can get from the free trial but I prefer open source tech.

So all you posters here who are interested in this, send me an email iamthebridget [at] gmail [dot] com and will contact you all as a group and see who wants to help develop this and who just wants to participate. I think between 2 or 3 people we can get a rough and dirty yet functional thingy (tech term) going in a few days. Thanks, paleo chix!

I'd love to participate. +1 for a great idea! – Atkins-witha-loincloth Jun 14 2011 at 5:58
Hey Mem - We have 4 participants so far and looking to get started very soon. Email me and I'll give you the details: iamthebridget [at] gmail [dot] com – baconbitch Jun 14 2011 at 14:47

I'd highly recommend looking over the Quantified Self web page rooting around for info and and potentially joining a local QS chapter- That is definitely one group that knows a LOT about self experiemntation, tends to be pretty techie and would have the tools, info and knowledge to help support what you want to do.

The Quantified Selfers tend to be the first people to find out about the new tracking tools and could point you in the right direction. Actually they are often the ones actually developing the tools!

I'm a frequent QS visitor and looked through their complete list of tools. There isn't anything that offers what I want. Edison is close but won't spit out a graph of a group experiment. – baconbitch Jun 13 2011 at 21:10

make your own.....i construct a QSELF program individually for all my patients based upon their needs. Rocks their face. You can do this yourself. BE creative. – The Quilt Jun 14 2011 at 2:24
Cool!- that's a great idea Quilt. I've been thinking that I could do similar for my friends and family- the key for me will be figure out how to give them tools that make it easier to measure things themselves as well as helping them compile and easily graphically view the data from labs (for better impact), etc... How do you get your patients to have the motivation to spend time measuring key values? – HeleneLohr Jul 1 2011 at 21:38

Hum, I am not active on it, but I think Spark People might have a lot of what you are looking for and everyone I know who is active is female.

I think there is a challenge system that would probably work well for experimental trials.

I am willing to jump on the bandwagon in August if you are looking for subjects

I was a member of Spark People awhile ago and found it too clunky. The community wasn't so much into self-experimentation and I couldn't find any paleo folks. But I'm willing to put a challenge up there and see if I get any bites. And yes! Hit me up in August. I'm starting this experiment within the next day or two but will be continuing to improve upon it so I'll hit ya up! – baconbitch Jun 13 2011 at 15:26

I did use health month for a while and liked it, but I don't think it will work as well for this... there is a paleo community though. – Vrimj Jun 13 2011 at 15:35
Thanks for the recommendation. I love game mechanics in health and wellness technology. I think they work well for community building and making people more involved. Great find! – baconbitch Jun 13 2011 at 15:42

I love this idea! Count me in. I already use Sparkpeople, just for calorie counting, haven't explored the social side of it. Let us know how we can help!
