Background: I’m a volunteer FS Wilderness Ranger and Wilderness Instructor for the Sierra Club. I also have my own business that keeps me on the road a lot.

Since I love to cook, I’ve been responsible for food planning for trips and wilderness patrols for many years – the switch to Paleo after finding out that I’m Celiac introduced a few new challenges in backcountry meal planning. When I’m not in the backcountry, I’m often on the road for my own business and that can present food-centric challenges of it’s own.

Is there a need for a site dedicated to Eating Paleo on the Move?

After meeting several other Paleo/Celiac/Gluten sensitive Rangers at one of our gatherings this year, I’ve been entertaining the idea of putting together a site dedicated to offering solid info, tips, tools, resources, links, and recipes for staying Paleo when you’re on the move- especially in the backcountry.

The site would start out as a blog covering my experiences with:

-Planning for Paleo backpacking/road trips

-Food arrangements with non-Paleos while backpacking /travelling and how to avoid cross-contamination

-Reviews of Paleo friendly backcountry/’on the road’ products

-Tips, tricks, recipes, links

Basically: It’s (somewhat) easy enough to eat Paleo at home and avoid cross contamination/etc, but how do you do it with ease and efficiency (on a budget) when you’re on the go?

I’m thinking the site would likely appeal to:

-Active Paleos

-Celiac/Gluten Sensitive backpackers

-PCT/AT thru hikers

-GAPS & WAPF crowds

QUESTION(s):

  1. To your knowledge, is there anything out there like this? Would you as a Paleohacker be interested?

  2. Will this be more effective focusing just upon paleo in the wilderness or should it also include staying Paleo on the road?

  3. What would you like to see in such a site beyond the usual tips and recipes?

I’m currently just fishing to see if this would be worth me investing my free time- I love to share info, but I want it to be something that people can truly use.

I've always been interested in becoming a volunteer wilderness person btw. Cool. – ben61820 Jun 13 2011 at 23:28
There's a lot of opportunities to volunteer in the wilderness... depending on where you live, you can work directly with the Forest Service, the BLM, a State, County or National Park or with one of the awesome volunteer organizations in your area- google it and you'll find it! :) good luck- it's VERY rewarding! – HeleneLohr Jun 13 2011 at 23:39

There are some things out there for Celiac/Gluten sensitivity and hiking (neither of which I have, so I don't frequent them). I've not seen anything specific to Paleo. Hiking/Camping sites? Tons. Paleo sites, numerous. Paleo Hiking sites? Not so much... Most of the requests for that type of detail are buried away on other sites amongst the cooking at home crowd.

The demand I would see is for Paleo on the road (road warriors, not just hiking/camping). Also, although you aren't targetting it, is long term storage Paleo. I believe the Mormon's are basing their long term storage around grains/lentils. Hard if you want to reduce the grains and be more paleo...

In terms of a niche thing. This is the Internet. Home of the niche. If you see a need, and you have the info/are willing to do the work, fill it. Note, this will probably be a lot more work than you think...

Definitely need recipes and experiences with them (speed of preparation, taste, how long it stores, etc). Experiences traveling with the foodstuffs (will the TSA give me a strip search for carrying a container of it through security, etc). Experiences with the food and your energy levels (you go hiking with XYZ food you prepared and crashed energywise earlier than you expected, etc).

As they say, "go niche or go home" and I think that Paleo back-packing certainly qualifies as a solid niche audience! I for one would be interested :)

Great idea! I would love to make my own dehydrated meals for backpacking. I just don't have the time to experiment to get the quantities of food & water right. It would be great to have a site for sharing recipies. I am always amazzed at the total junk that thru hikers eat...how do they do it? Yet you can only eat so much jerkey!

go to www.backpackingchef.com It's where I learned to use a dehydrator for food storage, camping, and backpacking. Also, google turned up an additional 932,000 entries for "Make my own dehydrated meals for backpacking." – mth Jun 14 2011 at 1:51
But are they paleo? I have looked at many sites and see mostly pasta and rice based entrees and every variety of cream of wheat or oatmeal imaginable for breakfast. If you have found one that is paleo I'd love to know! Thanks! – P-squared Jun 14 2011 at 19:34

Cool! That would be excellent!

No I don't think there's a need for that kind of site.

I don't see or hear a great clamoring for one either.

This btw is not to say I don't think you should make one. Just that you asked those particular questions.

I'd think that perhaps there wouldn't be enough stuff to cover/make into subject material. But I guess if you will build it they will come, right?

Maybe you're looking in different areas than I am? I do see a demand for it in requests for recipes specific to hiking/long term storage. But not much information on it out there (Pemmican? That's it?). – James Jun 15 2011 at 15:50
I suppose I just think there aren't enough answers, solutions etc to make a whole site for it. Isn't it kind of just, buy pemmican, make trail mix, bring jerky? By all means again man make the site; go for it. I was just answering if I think it's needed is all. – ben61820 Jun 15 2011 at 17:36
yeah, I guess it depends how far into the hiking awnd backpacking lifestyle you are and if you've already got your game down or are looking to improve your experience. Also perhaps people wouldn't be using the site continuously (we're not hiking all the time- even if we want to be :), instead they'd probably just dip in as they were planning trips. The sites/groups dedicated to thru hiking are always well trafficked. - of course that brings up the element of qinteractivity and community generated content and info...Whew! Thanks for your input – HeleneLohr Jun 21 2011 at 21:22

I would love a site like that! In a month, we will embark on a road trip/camping trip and would LOVE any advice about paleo camping, backpacking, etc. Have been hoping to come across something like that. Bonus points if you include info for kids, since my toddler doesn't have molars yet (making jerky and nuts big no-nos).

I too would be into a site like that. We're big campers and homers here, just went Paleo this week, so I'd love any info on this - great thoughts so far!

In recent times we have witnessed a proliferation of hundreds of bloggers, champions of the "Paleo Way Of Life", showing an extreme radicalism and not any real scientific argument or a minimun human evolutionary history knowledge to back them up, just as a response to a frustration forged after failure with hundreds of diets in his quest against their obesity problem. (They will never understand Paleo is not a "follow this rules"-Diet nor a low carb diet per se, is just a WAY, a kind of life filosophy)

And after my divagations, that will be unpopular for sure, I'll tell you that, honestly, I consider your idea as one of the most truly genuine, practical and related to the true spirit of "PALEO WAY OF LIFE" that I've seen. So all I can do is congratulate you on your project and encourage you into its achievement.

So please, keep us informed on your progression!!

Cool idea, but I think it might be a little too specialized; would be great to see some bloggers post on this, but there probably isn't enough there to devote an entire site to that concept.

Yes, I'd love that! Focused on 'in the wilderness' that is.

I would love a site like that also. I'm going on a 4 day hiking trip in September. I have a dehydrator, but haven't used it yet.

Great Idea!

Haven't seen anything like that yet, though would be interested for sure.

As an Army reservist new to Paleo I am dreading the time when I have to live on a ration pack for even as little as a weekend - not sure how my body will react as basically they're designed to give you lots of calories but they are mainly through sugars. Be great to see what you're suggesting desertsnail! I could take my own supplies with me!

This would be awesome. And I think it could be expanded when you think of the Paleo lifestyle, not just Paleo eating. For me, "Paleo" has turned out to include trying to go barefoot as much as possible -- I would love to be able to hike barefoot, for example. It has also meant sleeping on the floor, not using soap or shampoo -- basically questioning a lot of modern assumptions about what is necessary. There is a lot to explore there, and there are people doing it, spread over many places, but not a focal point. You could provide that focus!

Thanks Tracy! The idea of making about more than just food choices and prep had crossed my mind, and it's really awesome to hear it from someone else. I've been picking up backcountry/paleo skills for years now (recognizing and gathering wild foods, methods of natural firestarting, barefoot running and climbing, fishing, hunting) There's just so much that could be integrated. As you said, there are a lot of people doing it, but no focal point! :) -Helene – HeleneLohr Jun 15 2011 at 14:52
Wow, I would be soo interested in this. I'd be reading you everyday, if you could produce that fast! And, is this sexist? I think your voice would be tremendous as a woman doing all this. Really, almost all the voices out there are men. – Cave Tomboy Jun 16 2011 at 11:59
Thanks - I like to think I'd have a unique take on it too. I've got a few projects to get out of the way, but I picked up a domain name so hopefully you should see ethe new website on my profile in a month or so... – HeleneLohr Jun 21 2011 at 21:14

I think the niche for Paleo Backpacking might be too small as a site concept to attract a large audience, but could be included in a broader concept of Paleo Travel. I think you would do better with the broader concept with Paleo Backpacking as a serious subsection. Good luck with it.

Awesome thread, glad to see it resurrected. Any updates? Did this happen?

I went backpacking last summer and had to suffer with some rice. Bloat-o-rama. Nothing like sharing a tent with three other grain eaters... o_O

This could be a great resource. I also think you could extend the scope out to business travelers and folks who have to stay in hotels or such without access to a full kitchen. Make a comprehensive listing of restaurants where folks have had success adapting menu items. You could also have a list of Paleo-approved foods that can be purchased, though most of those tend toward cookies, faux granola, or jerky. You could have an urban traveler section and a trail traveler section.

I'm kinda surprised at the votes against it. Every trip I've made since going Paleo, I've had to think hard and prepare for the food portion of it.

A couple different things I'm being exposed to that make me interested in your concept.

  1. Andrew at Evolvify embarking on his 77Zero expedition, subsisting primarily on pemmican.
  2. Robb Wolf's well thought out answer about surviving the end of the world as we know it on episode 106
  3. That new show on National Geographic, Doomsday Preppers
  4. And finally, going on a 2-month cross-country roadtrip myself to promote the Primal Professional.

So ya. I'd be a subscriber =)

I for one would definitely be interested - I'm not a backpacker but I often work 13-hour days involving 10-12 miles of bike commuting to and from places without refrigeration (and I have to pack my own food because I'm too broke to eat out every day), so while technically I am in the middle of a major urban center, I might as well be in the woods for all the food that's available to me. I imagine that a website on paleo backpacking would have lots of super helpful stuff for me - and there have got to be other people in the same pickle.

I arrived on this thread because I was looking for that site.

Going Paleo (Primal Blueprint, specifically) helped me get healthy enough to go backpacking again. I don't want to give it up when I go backpacking.
