Hey guys,

I just started this diet. Im going with the no veggie no fruit way. Im trying to lean out a little before I head home in 2 months. I eat the healthiest I can get at the DFAC. I try to just stick with the meats they offer. (obviously probably not grass fed meat). The thing is I dont know what other fat alternative to eat that I would be able to measure besides nuts and I have been eating nuts like crazy. Im afraid this will definitely hinder my results if I am trying to change my body composition (lower belly fat and gain lean muscle). I crossfit 5-6 times a week along with some strength training.

Thanks for the help folks.

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but this sounds like a disaster about to happen. Those meats are about as bad as it gets, and I'm almost not even sure why nuts are paleo. Sounds like a PUFA overload and adrenal fatigue recipe. – Grok Jun 20 2011 at 3:44
suggestion then? – Stephanie Jun 20 2011 at 5:05
Low-fat high-carb. Watch your fat melt off, and your crossfit workouts soar. – Grok Jun 20 2011 at 6:18

Hmm. I'd say the success rate for that advice has been historically abysmal. – Ambimorph Jun 20 2011 at 14:20

I don't think you need to worry about adding fat, especially if the meat you are getting isn't just fish and chicken breasts. Regular ground beef is a cheap meat with plenty of fat, and pork chops are often nicely fatty as well. If you do want to add fat, because you are lacking energy, for example, what about butter?

I would seriously avoid nuts if you are trying to lose weight. They are much more likely to keep you from losing weight than most vegetables.

ETA: another idea for getting fat, if you have outside help, is to get someone to send you a jar of coconut oil.

i have just thrown away an almost full big jar of coconut oil - the most ridiculous 'paleo' food stuff after fish oil, which i have also thrown away - bought both of them under a stuff-yourself-with-weird-fat propaganda spell – gn Jun 20 2011 at 0:00
well.. what are you sayin I do then? There's really no advice in that comment... – Stephanie Jun 20 2011 at 5:04
As I said, you might not need to add fat unless you are having energy problems. Also, if you are just starting to reduce carbs it can help you adjust. I personally really enjoy coconut oil; I don't eat it to "stuff myself." – Ambimorph Jun 20 2011 at 14:22

would there be butter or cheese available? there was in the Canadian Military. Olive oil should also be available in the condiment area assuming you aren't in the field.

Well the only kind of meat i really disgest easily is chicken and fish, but I will definitely up the red meat. You think it would be too much to have a chicken breast and then maybe some other type of red meat and thats it as far that meal goes? Im just trying to see if Keto is for me. Im ordering some organic coconut chips unsweetened from nuts online. Im hoping to just use a little of this. What about in between the 2 meals? if i get hungry then what should i snack on? Or do I need to eat bigger meals to just last me in between IFs and meals? thanks guys :)

If you're doing intense workouts, you probably need to replenish glycogen. Why not try adding some carbs PWO, or just generally? They won't kill you, I promise :) – mari Jun 20 2011 at 0:38
It really isn't the best circumstances for trying a totally new way of eating. However, I understand not wishing to wait to improve your health. Just don't be too hard on yourself if you have to be somewhat flexible. You can give VLC a fair chance later if you still want to. – Ambimorph Jun 20 2011 at 14:24

If you're hungry between meals you need to eat more at your meals (says the man who can't stop snacking on dark chocolate ;-) )

Just eat boiled eggs as snacks and put butter and full fat cream on everything. Also be aware of zero carb dangers.

To peel a boiled egg squeeze it between your hands and rub it back and forth, "splintering" the surface. Then you can just pull off the whole shell in one or two tries.

Regarding the 'dangers', please see my comments in Brad's answer here: paleohacks.com/questions/18183/… – Ambimorph Jun 20 2011 at 14:28

It might be easier for people to follow the flow of the thread if you put your extra questions as comments to answers, to your question, or as edits to your question. I think you should add extra fat as needed based on how you feel. – Ambimorph Jun 20 2011 at 14:26
