I've done experiments with taking fruit in and out of my diet for a while now. I discovered that when I'm low carb or zero carb I always look thinner and feel better. Is this the tell tale sign that I have insulin senstivity?

I wonder if you mean insulin resistance. – g. Jun 19 2011 at 20:56
Feel better how? Looking in the mirror? This is a sign that you have no glycogen. – Grok Jun 28 2011 at 7:34
@Grok-I won't feel/look bloated and it'll take days for the bloating feeling to go away. I work out at night, would this have an effect? @grenadine-yes, insulin resistance. – Chris Jun 28 2011 at 20:24

I'm the same way...when the only carbs I eat are low sugar veggies, I look and feel better in every way...I inevitably slip into eating some fruit in the summer, and then usually add some nuts, before I know what hit me, I'm baking cookies with almond flour, butter and coconut sugar, and feeling bad...my binge tendencies get triggered by fruit and nuts...thanks for this post, it's reminding me to be extra vigilant of that slippery slope as we move into the season of abundant fresh local fruit...to answer your question though, I think that anyone who doesn't tolerate fruits well has blood sugar imbalance issues, but hard to say exactly what without more individualized information, and in the end, if just avoiding carbs is what works, maybe knowing the why isn't the most important thing ...

Fruit is definitely a gateway drug for me too. – Shari Bambino Jun 19 2011 at 22:27
I'm obsessed with "why" hahaha. I also don't tolerate dairy (makes me breakout) and since figuring that out avoiding dairy, even ghee, has been so easy. Having a reason makes things easier to say "no" to. – Chris Jun 20 2011 at 0:27

That's funny, I'm totally obsessed with the "why" as well...I just am always striving to let it go when it gets so complicated! – Rogue Nutritionist Jun 23 2011 at 4:37
Your binges are you body looking for the carbs it needs. Anyone not tolerating fruit well has a fat imbalance. The fat in your diet has you on the blood sugar roller coaster. – Grok Jun 28 2011 at 7:39

Or it could be that you are losing water. Carbohydrates are hydrating. An excess can cause water retention.

I know what you're saying, but I'm not sure it's that. I will feel bloated for days and weeks! Unless water retention works in that way...? – Chris Jun 20 2011 at 0:11

you lose 4g of water per stored carb...it just means ur leaner looking because your muscles arent holding water. guarantee it is the same weight gain/loss with carbs vs without, unless your overeating with carbs

i ate app 200g carbs yesterday prolly more and was at the pool in a bikini today, was told i looked jacked lol. now if i dont eat carbs for a few days, ill look 'ripped' and way to lean

that’s so funny because someone told me I looked good in my bikini today too haha. Congrats to you too girl! But all in all, my waist measurements will be different even though my weight is the same. And I definitely look "bigger" or bloated then on days I go VLC. So there's def something going on.... – Chris Jun 20 2011 at 1:20

It could be a sign, I am definitely insulin resistant and I do way better on LC, VLC or ZC.

Is zero carb bad for you though? Doesn't the body need carbs especially on the days you workout? I have no obligations to VLC or ZC from here on out, but I'm just wondering what I should be feeding my body in replacement of that? ZC on rest days? VLC on workout days? – Chris Jun 20 2011 at 0:24
Personally I don't count my carbs, cycle them or eat more pre or post workouts. I am VLC or ZC most days even on workout days, this seems to work well for me. On weekends I may indulge in some carby foods but this is random and not a planned thing. – Josh M Jun 20 2011 at 4:46

Or it's just a sign that VLC works really well for you.
