I've been on a lacto Paleo diet for the past 7 months. Have lost 16 kg.

But my hair now is a lot drier. For the last 3 months I have only needed to wash my hair in warm water, about once a week. No soap or shampoo.

Any ideas why?

Is your skin dry as well? – Travis Culp Mar 19 at 16:45

If you've been water only, the sebum (oil/wax mix your scalp produces) might be skewed toward the waxy side. Try washing cold-HOT-cold, with a strong finger-scrubbing of your scalp during the hot burst. If that doesn't work, try either a baking soda slurry rubbed into your scalp, or a single washing with a great shampoo (no -cones, no sulfates)...just one should be enough to set you right for a month or so.

If dry and brittle is the only symptom, it might just need some oil...try coconut or jojoba.

Eh, it's probably your body just urging you to take the next step in your Paleo lifestyle and jump on the "no soap, no 'poo" bandwagon. Happens to a lot of us ;-)

Seriously, though, if you only rinse your hair, do you find it is "too dry" or "just right" except now without having to spend money on shampoo?

Too dry. Before I started Paelo I used to wash my hair with shampoo everyday and if I didn't it would become greasy by the 2nd day. Now it is the other extreme. – questforfire Jun 21 2011 at 2:36
Do you live in a dry climate? Is it the dry season? It might be seasonal. I'd second JitzGirl's recommendation of coconut or jojoba oil. Rub in as much as you want (a small -- nickel size -- amount will moisturize short hair, a quarter-size will give you that shiny look for a day -- depends on your preference). Experiment. You may only need some oil once a week or less or more. – Cave Tomboy Jun 22 2011 at 8:53

One cause of dry hair is hypothyroidism, but that shouldn't be the case on Paleo if it's done right. What, exactly, do you mean by "lacto Paleo"? I'm used to that term with vegetarians, but not with Paleo. Try adding a kelp supplement or sprinkling sea veggies on your salads and see if that helps. I also agree with the coconut oil to use as a conditioner. That's what I do since my hair is just naturally becoming drier from age/going grey, and thereby coarser.

I don't know that Paleo can correct hypothyroid in all cases, but it definitely shouldn't cause it, so if the symptom is new, I'd not expect it to be that. Lacto-paleo means paleo with dairy. – Ambimorph Jun 20 2011 at 14:55

Maybe I'm misusing the term 'Lacto Paleo'. What I mean by 'Lacto' is that I consume dairy, as in milk, cream and cheese in small amounts. The paleo part is meat, fish, eggs, vegetables and some nuts.

I use a baking soda solution to wash my hair, which has worked really well for the past 2 years - never been healthier! When I want a little conditioning however, I do a rinse with apple cider vinegar. So silky!

Dry Hair Aloe Honey Moisture "Shampoo" Recipe

Been using this for a year when my hair gets dry and it totally works.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 c of homemade aloe gel or store bought, like Forever Aloe Vera Gel
  • 2 TBS Honey

Directions

  1. Combine all in your mini-food processor or blender. Make as smooth as possible. You don’t want any aloe chunks left in your hair.
  2. Take straight to the shower and shampoo. Leave on for a few minutes (the longer the better) than rinse out completely with water. That’s it.

See the full article that includes the benefits and all the reasons why aloe and honey are good for your hair and scalp.
