I need some kids' books for my daughters' collection that promote real, whole foods. Too many of the kids books we've read involve/promote classic kids' foods as a viable/positive option (grilled cheese, hot dogs with macaroni and cheese, pastas, etc.).

Help, PaleoHackers! What are some kid titles that support / promote wholesome, truly nutritious eating?

I don't know of any, but there's a hell of an opportunity for someone. – Carl_Stawicki Jun 20 2011 at 12:49
SERIOUSLY. What depresses me even more is that some of my favorite titles (in terms of story line and illustration) still have typical "kid foods" integrated. – familygrokumentarian Jun 20 2011 at 12:54

i got my kids a bunch of books about gardening and farming that are very cool. not necessarily about food, but about the process of making food. i really want them to think about where their food comes from, and they certainly are more likely yo try something new if they have participated in growing, cooking or gathering it in some way.

blueberries for sal

jamberry

the very hungry caterpillar

jody's beans

pickin' peas

big red barn

charlottes web

the carrot seed

growing vegetable soup

and the good brown earth

just like mama (a bit of a christian theme)

the milk makers

the honey makers

i know there are a bunch of great ones out there. we have one about maple sugaring, and some about commercial fishing, too. we get a lot from the library and the librians are always really helpful in finding what we are looking for. my son is really into tractors right now, and my daughter is really into the baby animals being born at the farm.

We sould write one! Maybe with a kid worrying about what his dog eats and researching how dogs eat in the wild and then realizing he has never seen a mac and cheese tree and wondering what kids eat in the wild. It is super easy to self publish on amazon right now aand we could illustrate with pictures...

I would eat them on a boat...I would eat them with a goat (goat stewed with curry, perhaps? lol)...I would eat them here or there...I would eat them anywhere! – familygrokumentarian Jun 20 2011 at 14:41
This is a great book, but every time I use the excuse, that's tough honey, would be hard...etc...she pulls out Try Mommy, just try, remember green eggs and ham. So I am suckered. – Kathi Jun 20 2011 at 18:10
