Has anyone had pre-paleo or baseline blood tests done in Ontario? How much, if any, was covered by OHIP? Is there any differences between blood tests offered here vs the States? i.e are they called by different names or anything, so I know for sure what to ask for?

i have looked into blood testing privately, but it seems lab can only release results to a doctor. i know mine will not request tests for me just because i ask for them, so i am considering a naturopath for access. hopefully this thread will reveal other options.

Naturpaths often do live blood testing, which is not the same thing. I would recommend pursuing a different doctor just for the blood tests. – JeJ Mar 14 2012 at 20:54

OHIP will cover all the basic tests, they will not cover VitD3 or some of the less standard lipid testing however you can usually pay for those your self.

Lipo (a) etc somewhere around $35, VitD3 is around $65

Wow! No vitd. Probably because there's so much abundant sunshine up there in Canada during those eight month winters. Who needs to supplement? – shah78 Dec 7 2011 at 14:46

My husband had a VAP test done at his own request, and it cost $325!! It's not covered by OHIP or QHIP (we live in West Quebec and have a family doctor in Ottawa ON). We think the VAP test was totally worth paying for out-of-pocket, but that won't be possible for everyone.

What, that seems a little crazy, maybe because you are out of province? I feel like I didn't have to pay for my blood testing at all that was done in my home province (BC), but whenever I get things done where I'm living now (Quebec) it always costs more. – JeJ Mar 14 2012 at 20:55
each province has its own list of payables and often they will pay for a test under specific circumstances. i know Otario will pay for a D3 test if your dr. fills out some extra paperwork; aka check in the box. – sage_ Mar 15 2012 at 9:27

I paid almost $500 to be tested for food intolerances. I did it through my naturopath. Not cheap, but it was worth it.
