Berchtesgardener Land is pastured dairy (maybe not 100 % year around but the best dairy products you can find in lots of organic Shops)

Freilandhaltung is not pastured, but at least chickens are outside. You either limit you egg consumption (if this is an important issue for you) or you buy demeter eggs in an organic shop.

I won't buy too much poultry or pork since the grassfed culture is quite unknown here in Germany. Even the official EU Bio stuff is quite ridiculous if one looks at its requirements.

But since you don't want to spend lots of money I'd advice to buy Wild Boar. They're quite a pest in the forests around Potsdam and Berlin, therefore it's the cheapest and best quality meat you'll find. I eat it this stuff on a regular basis. It's my favorite meat anyway.

And yes you can buy organ meats.

Around Berlin there is a lot plants to gather. Look at Mundraub website you can find fruit trees to gather for free. Also Obstbaumnutzgemeinschaft. This are two young gemrnas having a collective fruittreesharing around berlin. For meat im out of clue. Look at the farmer markets. Probably its hard to find. There is a Russian shop at S-Bahnhof Charlottenstrasse in Belrin they have some stuff between which you can take. Frozen berries cranberies and blueberries. And also fish from russia and baltic.

For fish. I suggest look at the supermarkets in the freezer. They have sometimes good fish there. look for aquaculture and avoid to take it. If you take fish take only Wild Caught fish. The MSC label. Marine Stweard Council is showing that it is fished sustainable.

The Canned food in Germany is probably often containing BPA layers. Also they use cheap table salt. In organic markets you find better canned fish.

Like Felix sayed slow food is quiete good adress to look.

Grass Fed Butter. In organic Markets there is a lot butters ÖMA and Berchtesgardener Land, and Demeter butter, and Schwarzwaldmilch,

Also there is some organic Butter from Danmark. Also there is french shops you get rawmilkbutter and rawmilkcheese there.

Farmer markets. Then thier is the Markthalle in Kreuzberg. There are two of them, the one with quality is in Bergmannstrasse Kiez.

Then you have Alnatura. This is a organic company with good thinking try to keep good quality and low prices and fair way. They have meat from packlhof you can look at alnatura website and see how the animals a rised.

Rostock is very close or other citiy a long the eastsea so you can go to the fisher cities and get fresh fish. Also there is fishing around berlin. Fishing is need a license in Berlin.

Wild Meat in Germ,any is generally only half wild. ITs fed by the hunter so they can hunt more meat. The hunter culture in Germany is a bit unbalnced and sick. So now there are also ecological hunters who think more in balance of the system. So the hunters feed the wild game to rise nummbers and shoot for fun. Just you know wild meat is semiwild. Also some wildmeat is hold in kinda farms. So you can buy organic certified wild farmed deer.

Wild boar and wild deer organically farmed. If you wanna have good nuts and good Raw Foods stuff. Then contact people of the WAMOS health center in Belrin Neuköln. Also there is a nice small market in Neuköln there is a fihersalesman. A good organic market is the one at Lausitzer Platz and the one at Chamissoplatz, and the markets at Kollwitz platz. Some good stuff you find also in the Turkishmarket at Maybach ufer.

There are a lot farmers around Berlin. SOme has sheep and also slaughter it by it self.

Here's an independent analysis showing the fat breakdown of commercial butters available in German supermarkets. I think that this is a more reliable marker of good quality, grass-fed dairy than marketing claims, as the higher the O3 content, the more the cow's diet has been grass/forage based.

What a coincidence! I'll be spending next year studying in Germany as well; I'll be in Berlin. I had all the same questions. Thanks for the tips everyone! I can't wait to try wild boar!

Paul already mentioned the most important things. Wild boar is amazing.

Some general hints: - The EU-Bio/*EG Öko* Labels are pretty much worthless. Naturland and Bioland are better, Demeter is the king of organic labels but still you might find someone who produces remarkable quality without these labels. - The best food is hard to find and won't be available in supermarkets. Contact your local Slow Food chapter to get in contact with local producers - Beef: You can usually get top-quality beef in packages of 20kg or even 10kg from local producers (farmer's markets) for ~ 7.50-9EUR/kg. A quarter (~70kg) is available for as low as 4.50€/kg. But in that region, wild boar might be even cheaper (and better). - If you have any further questions, feel free to ask in the Urgeschmack-Forum. If I remember correctly, there are some people from Berlin there.

Do any of you know good sources of pastured meat in the Munich - München area? =) Does any one know if regular beef and pork meat from Germany usually contain hormones/antibiotics?

When around the berlin-area - potsdam [a city close to berlin with good transit connections] is way too expensive for reasonable folks - organic ground beef, for instance - is 13,50€ per kilo (oct/2012). And that is a member-price at a cooperative chain of stores. It could easily be as high as 15,00€/kilo for full retail. That price is probably similar for potsdam, although it could be more like 16 or 17€/kilo.

As an alternative, and much more locally-accessible, usually only a short walk, is a 'foreign' market with a Halal butcher. There are less of these for the potsdam area although they exist. There, ground beef, specifically from young bull, for 4,49€/kilo. Eaten raw with a little mustard and fresh cilantro, it is very good. Between both plain, the organic raw, and halal, they are the same.

It makes a difference that the generations of 'foreigners' here remember what real bull is supposed to taste like, and look like; at most a generation removed from living out. The more of isolated generations who have been city-bred, the less they seem to know about what food should look and taste like. North americans are generally an extreme example: with a little discernment, most european food seems far more edible than anything on north america.

The young men at the local halal butcher are very enthusiastic and good with customer service, and generally this is the case at the halal butchers and 'foreign' markets. Whereas generally ethnic-germans are not, and have no idea what customer service even is; and people working at places like Aldi are wage-slaves besides. A regular butcher, a fleischerei, can have decent service: but then the price goes up, to ~12€/ kilo for neuland.
