I have a question and Im hoping someone can shed some light on this for me. My appt with a Dietician is not for a while and I would like some answers now. With my first pregnancy, I failed the one hour glucose test so they referred me to the 3 hour test. They told me to eat a diet filled with carbs and I did that and passed the three hour test. Now with my third pregnanct, I failed the one hour test. I forgot how long they told me I should not eat for and I ate at noon and my test was at three. I also ate something really small, I think a small croissant with a piece of turkey. So my first question is did my glucose level go up because I took the test three hours after eating something really small?? My other question is that they didnt instruct me to carb load for the three hour test this time (different Dr) so I actually ate very little the day before bc I was so stressed. I ended up with a normal fasting score of 89 but failed all the other scores afterwards. Now I am diagnosed with GD bc my scores were so high. Any input will be appreciated.
I'm assuming you've been doing the low carb thing for a while. If so...
When you go low carb, your body will adapt. It assumes that there is no glucose around and since your brain needs glucose, it makes your muscles insulin resistant. It's a protective mechanism your body triggers when in a glucose scarce environment. Since your muscles are refusing glucose, it frees up glucose for the brain.
All you have to do is load up on carbohydrates for a few days and your insulin sensitivity will return.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention...
The reason you failed the test, assuming your not diabetic, is because since your muscles are refusing the glucose, your blood sugar shoots up.
The test is archaic ....assuming you are paleo and have been for a while it would behoove you to get an a1c test to help build a case and show that you do not have GD. Start religiously monitoring your own post-prandial glucose (1 and 2hrs after a meal).
Keep a record for 2-3 weeks and then show to your doctor, if it's all good they should revoke the diagnosis of GDM.
Take some magnesium too.

These tests are actually dangerous to the mother and fetus if the mother is already fat-adapted. Don't follow stupid convention and take some test that you don't need to. My wife and I dropped our Doc and switched to Midwives when they tried to play the "you don't love your baby" card when we refused the test last year. The test contains no useful information, so the results don't matter. Also, don't try to ramp up your carbs just to pass a test. That's also not good for you.
