Hi guys, I very rarely drink alcohol, maybe twice a year, usually beer or bourbon, I have been eating paleo for 4 weeks now and we are having visitors so I would like to have a couple of drinks and enjoy myself with them for the night. I have heard tequila is best, but if anyone could tell me what would be best and how to avoid any after affects the next day, it would be much appreciated.

Take some N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) to prevent hangover. evolutionarypsychiatry.blogspot.com/2011/03/… If nothing else, it reduces the damage to the liver. – Dave S. Jun 23 2011 at 18:31
Wow...that's a pretty cool hack. God, I wish I knew about that in college...probably would've given me a good 10 more years on my liver. Go Badgers! – jared Jun 24 2011 at 19:40

/o/\o\ High five to this answer! Hydration is key to reducing some of the ill effects of alcohol. Plus, red wine is the best! – sherpamelissa Jun 23 2011 at 13:32

I do gin, sparkling water, and lime. It is better to do on an empty stomach, as it will only take a few for you to get your buzz on. After you're done drinking, drink a good amount of water to limit dehydration. As per Robb Wolf's recommendation, a good whack of protein and fat before bed will mitigate some of the negative effects that the alcohol will have on growth hormone release. I would also do some GABA and magnesium to help you wind down properly before bed. And plan to get more sleep than you would regularly require. If you require 8, plan for 9 or 10 because sleep QUALITY is diminished by alcohol consumption. Alcohol messes up with the sleep cycles, often preventing you from getting to that final level of sleep.

Most important of all, DON'T STRESS ABOUT IT SO MUCH! Have fun, enjoy your company and remember that one night of partying will NOT totally derail all that you have accomplished!

I don't mean to post jack but what makes tequila, superior to other liquors i.e. vodka?

It's not made from grain. – Chip Jun 23 2011 at 4:26

Ciroc is from grapes. Its vodka. There are others too that are not from grain. – amina Jun 23 2011 at 6:21
I think if it's distilled it doesn't matter if it's made from grain or not. – Henny Jun 23 2011 at 8:09
Amina, Ciroc is the duck nuts! Best vodka ever. Henny, i believe that distillation will get rid of the gluten, however most places that make alcohol aren't making gluten free alcohol, therefore there will be cross contamination. noglutennoproblem.blogspot.com/2009/01/… – peter Jun 23 2011 at 9:55
"For one, although distillation removes gluten from gluten-containing spirits, the source grains may still be present in the facility, and present the possibility for cross-contaminating the gluten-free final product post-distillation. (This is the same reason why GF beers should be brewed in a dedicated facility, so as to avoid cross-contamination with barley and wheat used for other beers.)" – peter Jun 23 2011 at 9:56

I don't think it's the Tequila per se that is the trick. Distilled liquor, especially from non-grain sources is the best choice. But Robb talks in the book about the Tequila, lime, soda combo being good. I suppose if you like lime and soda in your bourbon, that could work as well, ewww ;-).

If you don't want hard stuff, apple ale/cider or hard lemonade would be better choices than beer.
