I've got a jar of Jarrow and a jar of Nutiva, both organic extra virgin coconut oil. One says refrigerate (Jarrow) and the other says no need for refrigeration. The only difference I can see is that Jarrow is expeller pressed and Nutiva is cold pressed.
Any input on what is better? Has anyone had coconut oil go bad outside of the refrigerator? (or should I be eating the stuff much, much faster?!)
coconut oil is practically all saturated fat, and thus very shelf-stable. i never refrigerate my coconut oil, unless i want to have it harden up for some reason. i know paleos that like to eat it with a spoon, so i guess you'd want to have it solidify so you can spoon it out easier.
otherwise, there's no need to worry about storing coconut oil outside. one thing though- just make sure you don't get other stuff in there/ contaminate it with other foods, bc that will make the whole thing rancid. one time, i dipped a piece of dark chocolate in there, not realizing that a bit sank to the bottom. well, that dark chocolate had some sugar in it that must have fermented bc the jar of coconut oil seemed off. as long as you're being clean with it (no double dipping! hehe) your coconut oil will stay good for A VERY LONG TIME.
Coconut oil does not easily oxidize and also has inherent antimicrobial properties. I've never refrigerated it, and never had any issues, even in summer weather with melting/re-solidifying. Absolutely no problems. I keep the jar closed of course (fats easily absorb odors). I just emptied a 26oz jar of Nutiva that took me 3+ months to use, it never saw temps under 65°. Over the years I've used WF's 365 brand, and others w/o issue.
If the Jarrow brand says refrigerate, then do it for that one, don't worry about the others.

The taste and smell is just a little coconuty but no overwhelming. We never refrigerate ours. We use about 6 containers a year. In the fridge it is rock hard. Turns to liquid at 76 F.
Have never used any other brand. Have heard good things about Tropical Traditions.
Well I keep mine in kitchen cabinet....but would feel better about putting it in refrigerator. It would seem more sanitary and clean. I sometimes use for cooking eggs for breakfast on special occasions and would love for it to be more solid like butter. Also I put sometimes on steamed vegetables with a little sea salt and it taste great! Also sometimes put in smoothie! Also use in my natural lotions and skincare products.
I know you can keep it on shelf....but will it be okay to refrigerate?
