I am new to paleo and I am going on a 10 day retreat which I am very excited about. And I will be bringing my own food. I will have access to a fridge with freezer and a microwave but no stove or BBQ. Any suggestions on a few tasty paleo meals that I can prep in advance to freeze and heat up? I usually eat beef, bison and turkey as my protein sources.
I was thinking of cooking a slow cooker of flank steak and some sweet potatoes. Any other suggestions that freeze and microwave well?
Just to add a bit to the challenge and make it more interesting here are a few foods that I need to avoid: Allergies to: eggs, chicken, pork, nuts, seafood, kiwi Sensitivities: seeds, legumes, gluten, dairy, tomatoes
You can make a paleo sheperd's pie without using a tomato base. Using a cauliflower topping instead of the potatoes work's really well. You can freeze this in portions once you have baked it and then reheat it. I agree with the canned salmon, and possibly use sardines. Good suggestions from Bam Bam about the raw veggies too.
Stews would be ideal to reheat. Meat loafs including turkey loafs sound good too.
Also, buy the prepackaged frozen veggies out there.
Spinach, bells, sweet potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli and winter squash are all great options and easily prepared in a microwave.
Great ideas thanks. I think I will eat more fresh veggies at the beginning and then move to reheating later in the 10 days. The first few days I will pack a few pre-made fresh salads with pre-grilled steak/bison. The paleo sheperd's pie sounds amazing. I have never tried a meat loaf before so will need to look up a recipe.
The grill idea is a really good idea too but probably wouldn't be appropriate in this particular setting. I was thinking of grilling a few steaks before hand and freezing them but I haven't had much luck in the past with doing this - the taste and texture just aren't that great to me. The first meal I have when I get back will include something grilled for sure.
Thanks for all the suggestions... I am off to warm up my slow cooker to cook some flank steak for the first time.
