Just a little precursor: I just recently turned 30, I've been paleo (with the exception of some good butter) for almost 3 months now (Since 2/14). I started paleo to lose a little weight and get healthier. I've never had any numbers run prior to today. My company had our health insurance come in and do free cholesterol and blood pressure screenings. They didn't test LDL or Tri's, so these numbers might not mean anything.
Total Cholesterol: 190 HDL: 31 Non-Fasting Glucose: 76
If it matters, for breakfast I had a 6 egg western omelet and a double side of bacon (someone wasn't going to eat theirs :))
She did a good job of putting the fear of god in me, so I'm just looking for some info from the Paleo community as I did over hear them telling another to eat more grains.
I would not be concerned, however, you should go to your private doctor and ask for a VAP Cholesterol test to get the bigger picture and give you peace of mind, which will relieve stress. It will tell you your ratios and your pattern of LDL, etc. To give you an idea, my total cholesterol is 220, 134 HDL, however, my LDL size pattern is A, so it is nothing to be concerned about.
You total cholesterol NUMBER is fine, even ideal. However, your HDL (if accurate) is a little low. Google perfecthealthdiet (it's a blog) and read his recent post about raising HDL. More saturated fat raises HDL, not less. Although not discussed in that blog post, vitamin D may also help increase HDL.
You need a better test to verify HDL levels and LDL particle size. Part of being Paleo (for many people) is that your total cholesterol will go up, your HDL will go up and your LDL particle size will increase. These are all good things. Your HDL does seem fairly low, but you should get this retested. If you feel great, performing great in the gym why worry?
I agree with the others to get a more thorough test done. From what I have seen the most important thing is the ratio of HDL:triglycerides. I believe Dr Eades says it should be at least 1:1, on a paleo diet for about 3 years mine is 2:1 in favor of HDL.
You need to get a full fasting lipid profile with ldl and trigs to see the total picture. particle size is also good to know. exercise will help increase hdl and also omega 3 fish oil. overall, for a non-fasting partial panel, it looks pretty good.
