I bought coconut a while ago, and it tasted like coconut. Now I bought an other brand, same thing, no additives, organic, ... but it doesn't taste like coconut at all. It tastes like ... fat. Is this normal?

If it's expeller pressed, it won't have any flavor. Virgin coconut oil has coconut flavor. |

Yes it depends on the quality of the coconut oil. The only time I've ever tasted Coconut oil with a coconut flavor was the first time I used it, after that I can use the cheapest stuff and I no longer notice the flavor. Others do but I don't. |

Did you buy refined coconut oil maybe? It doesn't have the typical coconut oil taste or smell |

Does the tasteless oil still have the same benefits as the virgin coconut oil or does the processing destroy the fats? I always use the virgin stuff but don't like the coconut flavour on everything, so the tasteless stuff would be a nice alternative to butter/ghee. |

I buy the stuff from Tropical Traditions, and it smells slightly of coconut, but not too much, unless maybe you're really sensitive to it. It tastes subtly of coconut, but not much, even if you eat it straight. When I use it for cooking, the coconut smell pretty much goes away and the oil is nearly flavorless. They call this extra-virgin coconut oil, which is produced with minimal heat and no chemicals. They invented this label and no other coconut oils on the market are produced the same way. If other brands claim to be "virgin" or "extra virgin", they aren't made the same. Most coconut oils are created with a fair amount of heat and chemicals which I'd worry about a bit. You can read about it on their web site, or if you order from them, they send you a book about how they make it. To me it looks to be wonderful stuff, basically the coconuts are harvested and processed by hand. The oil is delicate and delicious, a lot different than any other coconut product I've used. |

Regular coconut oil is made from copra, which is coconut meat dried by moke drying, sun drying, or kiln drying , or derivatives or a combination of these three. Tasteless coconut oil isn't necessarily refined, only RBD coconut oil is. That's coconut oil that has been refined, bleached and deodorized (which requires high heat). Due to heating the taste of the coconuts can 'disappear'. Virgin coconut oil, however, isn't made from copra (it's made from fresh coconut meat or coconut milk), and doesn't require high heating. It can be made by quickly drying the coconut meat and then pressing it, or by pressing it immediately (and separating the oil from the water afterwards). Getting oil from coconuts without any heating/drying is called wet-milling. If you want oil that tastes like coconuts, be sure to get virgin coconut oil. |

I buy the organic cold pressed to eat and the organic expeller pressed to use on my skin and hair. The expeller pressed does not make me smell like a coconut. I keep it in the bathroom. I am allergic to everything. Doc says...if I can't eat it...don't put it on my skin.I use it on my hair to condition it (it is long) My skin is amazing now. I don't worry that I am poisoning myself through my skin. |
