Hi everyone,

I live in Barcelona and I was wondering if there are any other Catalan and/or Spanish paleo-ers out there that know where to find grass fed meats and pastured eggs?

All the "organic" meats and eggs here brag about being fed a solely corn and soy based diet, so I've been sticking to the conventional meat, which I understand is largely pastured until the last few months of life. I have not been able to find grass fed meat anywhere!

When I have the money I do spring for jamon de bellota (ham from free range Iberian race pigs that eat mainly fallen acorns) but at 70-120 €/kilo I find myself only buying 100-200 grams at a time.

Regarding eggs, there are the "ous de pagès" (huevos camperos) but I really don't trust how pastured they are (some boxes, too, brag of the soy/cereal based diet)

Any recommendations?!

Thanks in advance!

You might try to find biodynamic products- always grassfed. Demeter is the European certification agency. – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Jun 26 2010 at 14:54

Hi Shawn. We are in Catalonia as well, moved here from NY a year or so ago. In NY we could easily find 100% grass-fed and finished meats in the farmer's markets. The best we can find here is the vedella ecologica dels Pirineus. It's year old calf meat that has been grass-and-milk-fed loose in the Pirinees prairies for 7 months. Then it goes through 3 months of free-range fattening. Which means it is fed organic grains but each calf has access to 1.5 hectare of open grass field. Then, for 30 days it is fed only organic grain. In barcelona there are several butcheries that carry this meat. We have frequented the one on El mercat de Santa Catarina on ciutat vella. But we know there are some on the markets of Gracia as well.

I live in the Sierra de Aracena in SW Spain, and many folks hereabouts raise sheep and goats. So it's just a question of buying a lamb or a kid, or having a friend give you one, and you slaughter it. Only sure way I know of getting genuine grass fed animals.

About 20 years ago I learnt to slaughter and butcher animals. Sound awful I suppose, and although I love animals, I do it to eat.

Although I am not into bullfighting and agree with it's ban in Catalonia, living in Murcia, I get good grass fed bull meat and horse meat from the butcher beside the bull ring at a good price.

I live in Seville and buy from grassfed from www.terneralascasas.com in Cádiz.

Their website says the diet is based on cereals and legumes grown on the property...not grassfed – Joan Mar 14 2011 at 9:14
"A esta edad se les cambia de parcela y comienzan a alimentarse a base de hierbas frescas y desecadas de la propia finca, que les suministran un alto nivel de fibra nutritiva, ácidos grasos insaturados y ácido omega 3." I assume I need not translate it for you. I am aware that they are also provided some grain but its the best I could find locally. I'd love to find meat that is exclusively grassfed. Maybe you know of somewhere.... – Primal Mama Mar 19 2011 at 20:28
Oh, duh, sorry, I didn't realize you were the OP. Good luck:) – Primal Mama Mar 20 2011 at 8:13
0 Found it: vedellarosada.cat/inici/inici.php 100% grass fed in the Pyrenees from autoctonous race cattle Don't know if they ship outside of Catalunya, though – Joan Apr 13 2011 at 21:26

Just checked it out. Unfortunately the website says that they too supplement with cereal when the climatic conditions are unfavorable... "Durante las épocas en que las condiciones climáticas no son favorables, se suplementa la alimentación con cereal ecológico" :( – Primal Mama Apr 14 2011 at 10:42

Thanks a lot for your help!

Hey Francois!

Another paleohacker from Barcelona here!

Online I've found this:

link text

But you've got to buy veal. I know a butcher in one of the municipal markets who has told me she can get 100% grassfed beef from Galicia, but I haven't had time to speak to her about it yet. Another option is quality argentinian beef from a specialist butcher. So how many paleohackers are we in Barcelona? 3?

I live in BCN I've also seen this online: www.pirinat.cat But never tried it I buy my beef directly from La Boqueria Parada de A. Casanovas (right next to "Plaça del Pagès") It's not grassfed per se, but it comes from Vic, is well priced and it's delicious If you like lamb "lechal" is suckling so it's def. not fed grains! – Joan Oct 14 2011 at 13:43
Also, in La Botifarreria de Santa María (Passeig del Born) I've seen grass fed beef ("vedella de pastura"), though I've never tried it as ridiculously expensive (13 €/kilo for hamburger) – Joan Oct 14 2011 at 13:46
yeah, 13euros per kilo for mince is a bit ridiculous. So d'you buy all your food in the boqueria? Good to know there are other paleohackers in bcn! was beginning to feel like a rare breed, getting funny looks when I ask for my eggs to be fried in butter! – Jamie Oct 14 2011 at 16:31
Yeah, in general I buy all my food at the Boqueria. It actually works out cheaper than the supermarket and the quality is incomparable. The ground beef from Carniceria Casanovas is 3.90 per kilo and it's delicious. It also helps I live 50m from the market, but when I lived in Sants I shopped at Mercat de Sants and de Mercat de Hostafrancs and they are equally as good! – Joan Oct 15 2011 at 9:08
€3.90 a kilo! I don't think it's possible to get any meat apart from chicken, for under €4.50 a kilo here (Ibiza). – Warren D Apr 13 2012 at 10:49

Make that 4. I started reading Perfect Health diet in Boston last year before moving here in January. I've been shopping at Mercat de la Barceloneta finding produce equal to La boqueria and without the crowds, but thought that grassfed was a lost cause here. "vedella de pastura" is a welcome addition to my vocabulary!

@Jamie I talked about cooking in butter with a local here and she was horrified :-D

Like I said, I shop at the Boqueria because it's 1 minute from my house. I think all of the municipal markets have outstanding quality products and would shop at whichever was most convenient for me. – Joan Oct 17 2011 at 14:48

Hello everyone! I'm ecstatic to find other Paleo eaters living in Barcelona! I've been trying to find grass-fed beef here for years and had almost given up. So difficult to get a straight answer from suppliers. People look at me like I'm crazy when I ask around, say in the Boqueria. I'll check out these suppliers you mention here.

Is everyone familiar with Meetup? http://www.meetup.com/ Perhaps we can create a group on there and organize some meetings and events. It would be great to meet other paleo eaters and to be able to share resources and ideas.

Is anyone interested?

Sounds like a great idea to arrange something. There's actually a Spanish paleo group, although very exercise orientated, and we have a meet up in Barcelona tomorrow to do some barefoot running. Set up a group on meetup and put the details on here. Would be great to get things moving... – Jamie Nov 25 2011 at 22:27

Found some real good beef in La Illa in a store called Bovinum. The "chuleton de buy Cebon" apparently was almost 100% grass fed...at least that's what they said. But, it was sort of marbled like a grain fed steak...so, just not sure...

It would be great to meet up and discuss these issues.

The big problem here in Spain is that everyone is convinced that produce is exceptional when in reality it isn't, so I also get weird looks when I ask for the origin of food and if it was grassed or not....In Mercat Fort Pienc they have a quality butcher with beef from Llieda that was real tasty. but, I'm not exactly looking for tasty...I'm looking for grass-fed, which by default is probably tastier..

François, coming from California I can tell you the produce is on par or better here (on average) than the world famous california produce, and definitely cheaper. Regarding meat, there's no question: I get nauseuous just thinking of the supermarket meat I used to buy in California. – Joan Dec 14 2011 at 18:00

Hi - I'm new to Paleo and live near Orihuela in Costa Blanca. I find it difficult to get information about the source of any meats and can't find coconut oil at all. I know I can get coconut oil online but does anyone know if there is any chance of being able to order grass fed meat online too?

Are there no health food shops in your area for coconut oil? – Warren D Feb 4 2012 at 22:13

Hi fellow paleo-eaters! I have been looking for paleo dieters in Barcelona but did not find much. Just to add a bit on paleo here. I order a lot of superfood from the UK as they offer fair prices on shipping and I find that the range of products is much better than what I can find here. It is also very time-consuming to go and check every tiny bio etc. shop in the city if you want something. I have not managed yet to source good meet or easy-to-get bio veg&fruit. Also, do you know anyone where could I buy almond meal or coconut flour?

Most importantly, would you be anyone up for a meeting next week to talk about Paleo&living in Bcn?

Many thanks. Zuz

Hi all,

Aspiring paleo eater here, living in Castelldefels, working in the friendly city. I'd be very interested in a meetup to discuss Paleo shopping solutions in BCN. My focus so far has been removing the big NO-NOs from my diet but next up should be finding clean products for what remains on the plate.

As it is very related to Paleo, are there any CrossFit boxes up in BCN yet? I've only come across the Kettlebells group up in Lesseps.

Cheers!

Me too, I would be more than happy to meet-up and discuss paleo-related shopping in Bcn. Let me know. Cheers. – Zuz Mar 17 2012 at 15:10
hey folks, in case you didn't see the sepreate thread. I'm initiating a meetup this weekend: paleohacks.com/questions/114066/… Tobbi G.- there are no boxes yet in BCN but there will be soon. contact me and I can recommend other options til then. – Scott Apr 25 2012 at 4:38
Sorry, I missed these replies way back when and only saw this now via a Google search! I have been doing Kettlebells in Barcelona for a while now which satisfied my hunger for Crossfit. Saw that there is a box in the nearby Viladecans but prices are quite high. Been trying to eat Paleo here but am struggling to find meat up to standards. And doon't get me started on the availability of coconut oil!! If you guys are still up for a chat on Paleo+Barcelona drop me an e-mail: tobbi@1.is – Tobbi G. Aug 1 at 16:44

Hi there! Here it is one more from Barcelona. Well, I'm a pretty weird situation right now. I've been an ovo-lacto-vegetarian for 5 years for personal believes. It worked more or less well but now, after being aware of the potential problems with grains, legumes and omega 6 I narrowed even more my food choices and in the end decided to gave up on vegetarianism and accept evolution so I'm back eating again some animal meat.

It's not that I like the idea a lot, but if I shall go this route, I want the possible best quality so better be informed and have good sources at least. So...

I've seen here the debate is mostly around beef. Well, I think it would be interesting to list places where we could find other kind of animal products that are fresh and grass-fed (and if possible, economic...)

For example, I've had some troubles with eggs (and that has been my most reliable source of animal protein/fat for some time now). Most places sell 'organic eggs' but is difficult just as @Joan said to know if that means pasture raised or just that they eat organic grains. Right now, when I'm able to, I get to 'Biospace' and buy the Espartizal ones that state that chickens are grown freely and also high in Omega 3 (so that should mean that their food is at least good quality). They even have the numbers of DHA and EPA and a class 0 digit number so it's the best I've found until now.

My other concern is with milk and cheese. Even in organic stores there's no claim that any dairy product comes from grass-fed cows (or goats/sheeps). There's plenty stating organic but again, as some of you noticed, we don't care organic as much as grass-fed... Have you ever find some reliable source of grass-fed dairy? At least, at Carrefour they sell Kerrygold butter which seems to be top quality Irish butter that comes from grass-fed cows. When I'm not cooking with olive oil and do it with butter, I try to let it be this one.

I'd also be interested in pork. Shouldn't there be 'jamón' that is not as expensive and pure race as 'bellota' yet it can pasture? i've found the brand 'Jamón de trévelez' at Mercadona which is 'Jamón Serrano' (not 'Ibérico') but it says that their porks do pasture free, but I've found some evidence on some web sites that this shall be 'recebo' and thus they do not...

I am not in Barcelona. However, the sheep's and goat's milk cheeses are probably at least mostly grass-fed. (Even when cow's milk cheese aren't, the others tend to be. Please forgive me for not having links with the relevant information.) I bought them at Mercadona. How about fish and shellfish? We ate mostly Sardines, etc., when we were there. I honestly have no idea with eggs or other meat. I didn't eat a ton of meat other than jamón while we were there because I wasn't sure about origin. – blueballoon Mar 22 at 0:24
Thanks a lot for your input. Yep, I recently started to buy more goat/sheep based products, I wasn't really aware that they were more probably grass-fed, just did it for the lower lactose and A2 casein advantages. I also eat a good variety of blue fish, It seems that quality is pretty fine almost everywhere so shall we just focus on smaller fish that is less probable to contain high mercury levels? Do all the mercury stuff matter at all? – Albert83BCN Mar 22 at 8:36

I'm not sure about the fish/mercury issue. I tend to eat lower on the fish food chain to avoid large toxin build-ups. I think that it's probably not just mercury that is harmful, but regardless smaller fish seem to be better in that regard. (Sardines are cheaper than tuna, as well.) If you want info about specific fish and shellfish types, check out seafoodwatch.org. It's not Spain-specific, but has good information. – blueballoon Mar 23 at 12:11
