My daughter has joined a play over summer vacation which involves an hour round-trip commute twice a day. The problem is that every time my three year old son gets in a car for over 45 minutes (no matter road conditions) he ends up throwing up all over the back of the car.

Any ideas on any sort of help of remedy for a three year old with motion sickness? I know ginger pills are supposed to work, but I really don't think he's going to swallow a pill...

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Is there a way to make sure he can see out the window? I'm still prone to car-sickness - I can't focus my eyes for too long on anything inside the car or I'll get barfy... can't read, etc.

He sits in the center in the back seat, so he has clear sight through the front windshield. We learned really quick that if he has anything to look at it'll only take 5 minutes or so. – Morgan Jun 30 2011 at 21:39
makes for boooring car-trips as a kid, not being able to play with anything or read. :[ Hope some of these other tips work for yr li'l dude! – g. Jun 30 2011 at 21:58

My daughter responds really well to the hyland's combination homeopathic formula for motion sickness ...be sure not to touch the tablet, put it in the cap and pop it into the child's mouth...one is all you need, have them let it dissolve under the tongue.

I'll have to check those out for sure! Where do you usually buy them? – Morgan Jun 30 2011 at 21:42
I get them at our local Co-op...I imagine most health food stores would carry them, or you could certainly find them online! They really have been a blessing for my daughter, and therefore, for our whole family. – Rogue Nutritionist Jun 30 2011 at 21:58

A chiropractor would always say motion sickness comes from a subluxation in the neck.

I would stir the ginger pill into a yogurt for my girls before a road trip and they ate it up eagerly. The pill form of ginger is a capsule so I just broke it open and sprinkled it in. You can also find ground ginger in the spice aisle that I think would work too.

As someone who suffered from bad bouts of motion sickness as a little kid, I really empathise with both you and your son. (It never really occurred to me until now how testing it must also have been for my parents!)

I remember trying multiple prescription and over-the-counter anti-nausea medications, including traditional/natural ones like ginger, but nothing taken orally ever worked for me. Plus, like most little kids I hated swallowing pills and loathed the taste of ginger.

Acupressure wrist bands were the only thing that ever worked for me. I was given my first pair by a very kind family (also with a car sick kid) that we met whilst travelling, and happened to have an emergency spare set.

I know that it probably sounds like woo, but there are actually quite a few studies to support the use of wrist acupressure as an anti-nausea treatment as much in motion sickness, as for chemo and morning sickness e.t.c.

Ginger essential oil...he can just smell it or rub it into the bottoms of his feet. doTERRA is the best brand I've used. It can also be used internally...add a few drops to warm water with honey as a tea (obviously not a good choice for the car). If he has sensitive skin, dilute 1:1 with a carrier oil.

I'll have to try some of this as well. Why rub it into the bottoms of his feet? – Morgan Jun 30 2011 at 17:46

You might look into having an audiologist see him. It may be an inner ear problem that can be easily fixed. Fwiw, I've got a bachelors in speech pathology and audiology. I've seen audiologists work with inner ear problems.

Ginger really is one of the best things for motion sickness or any nausea. Take a look at these - they might have some at your local Whole Foods or other healthy food store.

I'll go get some of these and try for sure! – Morgan Jun 30 2011 at 17:36
My boss gets seasick/motion sick/airsick really bad and I recommended ginger capsules and he no longer has to take Dramamine. It's made a huge difference for him, plus he doesn't get the side effects from the Dramamine. – jared Jun 30 2011 at 19:19
I wonder if ginger works for seasickness too – Karen Jun 30 2011 at 20:59

How about ginger beer?

I would stop the car in a parking lot at the 30 minute mark and go for a 5 minute walk.

He's usually out of the car for 5-10 minutes at the halfway mark. He's thrown up now every single time right about the time the wife gets in the driveway. – Morgan Jun 30 2011 at 17:26

Well can he do a somersault?

I am not sure if I have the sort of inner ear damage that prevents motion sickness or if it was my habit of doing somersaults over and over again up and down my parents backyard until I got dizzy and couldn't, but I have never gotten motion sick as an adult.

It makes fair rides sort of annoying and not much fun, but other than that I can't think of any side effects from trying it.

Are you saying to have him do a bunch of somersaults in the yard before getting in the car? I need something quickly, I can't deal with the poor little guy throwing up twice a day for the rest of summer. – Morgan Jun 30 2011 at 17:27
I don't think it will work quickly but if he starts now he might be ok by next summer. I wouldn't do it right before getting in the car, just add it in as a game. Sadly I don't know of anything quicker. – Vrimj Jun 30 2011 at 17:30

Reed's Ginger Brew? A bit sugary, but delicious and very gingery.

He's never actually had anything carbonated before, but I'm willing to try anything! – Morgan Jun 30 2011 at 17:25
I drink it at parties when people are drinking beer and I can't. My toddler had some with me once and loved it. Trader Joe's, whole foods, and even some Safeways carry it. It's super yummy, so he would probably be excited when it's time to drink it. – Sara Jul 1 2011 at 1:37
