Did anybody have any success treating (or maybe even curing?) Tourette's syndrome using Paleo- and/or any other -hacks? Appreciate your help a lot!

Hoping Dr. Quilt weighs in on this. He should know quite about this one, so let's hope he's reading today. – Thomas Seay Jul 3 2011 at 14:53

I have Tourettes, a lifelong annoyance and embarrassment. I had noticed a relationship between eating sugar and severity of tics many years ago. I went Paleo a few months ago for health reasons and was surprised when I got almost complete relief from tics and compulsions. I feel normal. I have no theories to offer as to why, just, it worked.

Have you noticed any other correlations? Coffee? L-carnitine? Magnesium? Niacin? Lecithin? Taurine? – John Jul 18 at 8:28

A good friend of mine resolved all of his child's tourettes symptoms by going strict GAPS with his entire family. You could look into that and see if it appeals to you. The website could use a little work, but I've heard a lot of good things.

There is a treatment for tourettes with a dental device. It is really quite amazing. Just search for tourette's and dental device and you will get lots of hits with videos showing it working.

Googling "tourette's dental device" I didn't find anything particularly useful. Could you please give a little more information? – John Jul 3 2011 at 15:20

Here is a link to Pretty in Primal that talks about different dental malformations and newer ortho fixes. There is a link for tourettes in this article that takes you to info about the dental device. prettyinprimal.blogspot.com/… – Terry Jul 3 2011 at 16:36

Tourette usually has significant ADHD symptoms and in kids, at least, is often intially diagnosed as ADHD before symptoms like tics are known or appear.

Dr. Emily Deans of Evolutionary Psychiatry blog has some nice posts on ADHD treatment via paleo diet and specific supplements that might be helpful.

Response (via research report) to omega 3 supps have been very mixed over the years. But, for some, quite positive re: learning differences and ADHD.

You didn't write whether you are paleo now and for how long. See Dr. Dean's blog for wheat's implication in particular with other brain disorders.

I'd certainly think that a substantial and strict trial time (several months) would be a very reasoned thing to do.

Best to you in your search! Tourette or no Tourette, paleo is good stuff!

My daughter had a tic of a different sort (eyes rolling back in the head) and we cured it within 2-3 days with l-carnitine supplements. Anytime it came back we started up the supplements again so had plenty of chances to see that it really was the supplements that stopped it. That's not to say that Tourette's has anything to do with l-carnitine since I am sure you are getting plenty of meat right now, but maybe look for a nutritional link in your research. I'm convinced that nutrition plays a greater role in most diseases than we give it credit for.

What type of L-Carnitine you used and what were the dosages? Thanks! – John Jul 18 at 13:03

I have DRAMATICALLY improved my symptoms while following a clean Paleo diet. Whenever I cheat on pizza, gluten or foods containing artificial flavorings/color my symptoms come back the next day so bad. I also notice the more strict and lower-carb I go the better my symptoms get. Maybe the deep ketosis allows my brain to function more optimally.
