Jack, I'd add some grass fed beef liver and some healthy fish eggs to that list and I think you're good to go.

I take my recommendations from this list by Chris Masterjohn, on the Weston Price website:

  • Cod Liver Oil to supply 20,000 IU vitamin A and 2000 IU vitamin D per day
  • 1 quart (or 32 ounces) whole milk daily, preferably raw and from pasture-fed cows
  • 4 tablespoons butter daily, preferably from pasture-fed cows
  • 2 or more eggs daily, preferably from pastured chickens
  • Additional egg yolks daily, added to smoothies, salad dressings, scrambled eggs, etc.
  • 3-4 ounces fresh liver, once or twice per week (If you have been told to avoid liver for fear of getting "too much Vitamin A," be sure to read Vitamin A Saga)
  • Fresh seafood, 2-4 times per week, particularly wild salmon, shellfish and fish eggs
  • Fresh beef or lamb daily, always consumed with the fat
  • Oily fish or lard daily, for vitamin D
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil daily, used in cooking or smoothies, etc.
  • Lacto-fermented condiments and beverages
  • Bone broths used in soups, stews and sauces
  • Soaked whole grains (omit)
  • Fresh vegetables and fruits

P.S. Update: I'm pregnant and due in April 2012!

gilliebean that's a great list. i hadn't seen that. i did read chris masterjohn's entire article on nutrition for pregnancy on the WAP site. But I like this concise list. Thank you. by the way... she does eat beef liver occassionally. i forgot to include that :) – Jack Kronk Jul 5 2011 at 18:39

I couldn't handle liver on it's own while i was pregnant but I ate hte hell out of some Jewish style chopped liver and a dip my mother in law makes by mixing cod-livers and cultured farmer cheese. – Aughra Jul 5 2011 at 18:40

Sometimes I can be a bit "challenged". I just showed my wife this thread, and I was like "Look hun! Look at this chart gilliebean put up from WAP!" She took a 2 second glance and was said "Yah that's the chart we have on our fridge". ME--> "Who, us?" So I walk into our kitchen. Sure enough. There it is. She said it's been there for at least a month. I cook in our kitchen pretty much daily. Major face palm. – Jack Kronk Jul 6 2011 at 21:31

First question: Is this girl from one of the countries of the former Soviet Union? Former Warsaw Pact countries count.

Assuming the above is true: what girl EAT to get pregnancy?

I think the timing is more important than the what. Pregnant girl get food for pregnant women between ~11 weeks and ~9 months.

The question is: what is the current thoughts on the optimal diet for a pregnant woman who's 11 weeks along? – gilliebean Jul 5 2011 at 18:01

The very most important thing is that she eats something. IF THE ONLY THING SHE CAN KEEP DOWN IS CRACKERS THEN SHE SHOULD EAT SOME GODDAMN CRACKERS. I had two very healthy babies not eating Paleo. Paleo may help in some way, but don't stress it. Or anything. Stress is very bad during pregnancy. Foot rubs are good, as are hot baths. Go to every appointment you possibly can. The one my husband had to miss was the first heartbeat. Just thinking about it is causing me to tear. Congratulations, and let your instincts take over. We DO know how to do this. – Sara Jul 5 2011 at 18:09
exactly, gilliebean. – Jack Kronk Jul 5 2011 at 18:40
@ Sara - excellent point! – Simibee Jul 5 2011 at 21:49

@Sara -- yes, obviously, if the only a pregnant woman can keep down is crackers, she has to eat as does her baby ---- that said, I vehemently disagree with what you appear to imply: "eat whatever you want since you are pregnant". This is the common nonsense and a total excuse for not even trying to eat healthy. – Patrik Jul 6 2011 at 0:39
