I've been doing Paleo for a little over a month now I guess, I'm not too good with tracking time, but in that period I've noticed a lot of changes. What is the SINGLE best change you've noticed?

I'll go first: Best bowel movements ever! I always thought I needed more fiber or grains, so I ate more fruit and bread, but nothing really regulated the situation. I no longer have any issues which to me, is priceless. I'd eat dirt sandwiches every day if it meant not feeling bloated, uncomfortable or irregular. Without the bread of course.

I have to agree with the movements. I ate pizza twice this weekend, and am paying dearly for it. – Sara Jul 5 2011 at 18:54
grrrrrls - talkin' 'bout the poo! – none Jul 5 2011 at 19:35

I like that there's a place where one can talk about the poo without everybody freaking out. I mean, nobody wants details, but it's something we do every day. People have gotta grow up. Or down. Which way to people gotta go to talk about their functions? – Sara Jul 5 2011 at 21:25

Complete, 100% resolution of 30 years of depression and 16 years of anxiety. 75% of my life I was plagued by affect disorders, most of the time extremely severe. Gone. Gone. Gone.

Still have some ADHD or ADHD-like stuff remaining (at a less significant level). Meds and behavioral scaffolding work very well.

It's astounding and is noticed by everyone that has known me over time. All of my relationships have been positively affected. Every last one.

ETA: along with complete, 100% resolution of psoriasis, eczema (extreme, disfiguring at one point all over my face, neck, hands, arms), sjogren's syndrome, symptoms of MS, symptoms of lupus and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.

So yeah, it's tough to pick SINGLE but if I have to, it's the mental health benefits.

Katherine - I'm right there with you. I didn't know it was possible to feel "normal". I'm still getting used to it. OCD is just about gone too. Its great to hear another sistah giving up the props for what paleo can do for depression/anxiety. (Said with a fist in the air for solidarity!) – baconbitch Jul 5 2011 at 19:17

ENERGY! I have so much energy now I can exercise like a beast at 5:30 AM.

I helped a friend move over the weekend and there were five ladies there ranging in age from 35-45 (3 of them were obese). I was the only one who could carry heavy boxes downstairs in 100 degree heat and run back up the stairs again. The others just watched me and their 16 year old daughter handle the upstairs boxes---up and down the stairs about 25 times in 2 hours no problem. The next day everyone was complaining how sore they were and needed help getting up off the floor (I went home and ran 2.5 miles). That would have been me two years ago...

After Paleo transformed my life and healed me physically, mentally and (I believe) spiritually, I decided to devote my life's work to helping people heal through diet and lifestyle change.

I have returned to college at age 36. I'm maintaining a 4.0 GPA in a significantly demanding science major (Dietetics). I was hired for summer work with the American Diabetes Association and have logged 100 hours towards my CDE (Certified Diabetes Educator) license. I'm well on my way to doing what I came here to this world to do - promote health in young populations in school communities, write a book series that advances real nutritional science and maybe found a Diabetes + Obestity Care clinic with a focus on integrative medicine.

I am amazed by my energy and focus at school. I can run with my dog in the morning, eat 4 times per day, hit the books for 8-10 hours, lift weights in the gym and talk with friends and family on my phone. I wasn't always so well-put together. It's so extreme that I only vaguely remember what the version of me just two years ago used to feel like.

Gone are the days where I feel like a failure and obsess over time running out on me. Odd jobs. Broken relationships. Firings. Resignations. Rejections. Bad interviews. Roommate nightmares. Failed businesses. A 2 year long misguided book project. Lost friends. Thousands of dollars down the drain. Lies. One too many cheap flings. Self-esteem issues. Hiding from my relatives because of shame.

There is no more confusion about my purpose or meaning in this life and that was missing with me all these years.

I really feel like I found this treasure trove of positive energy that I want to share with the world from this point until the day I die (at age 112). I consider myself happy at last...the kind of happy that only temporarily escapes my grasp but there is nothing even remotely strong enough to pry it from me completely.

So Paleo has given me this gift that I have with me for life. I am taken care of and feel like I always will be...so now it's on to other people, starting with family and friends in my circle...or a stranger in a bar.

ALSO...

*I'm not a fart machine anymore which helps on dates.

So inspiring. I love hearing these answers! I love to see people focusing on what makes them feel good and fulfilling their dreams in life. Awesome Bambam! Thank you. – KellyBoBelly Jul 6 2011 at 0:50

Heck yeah man. Keep writing along with everything else, if you have the time for it. You have a very readable style! And congrats man on the positive change! The whole leaf-turning thing is something I've been working on, and my goal is to really get right in my 30's what I should've been doing in my 20's. – Futureboy Jul 6 2011 at 5:46

Realizing how it feels to truly be alive as a human being: knowing what real hunger feels like and how to satisfy it; knowing what it feels like to be tired from hard work but not mentally exhausted; enjoying the smell and taste of good, healthy food (the smell of a freshly picked, sun warmed strawberry, the heady sensation of it's true sweetness as it is devoured); the indescribable feeling of contentment that comes from knowing in my very soul that this lifestyle is what is best for myself and my son and that he will grow up with the knowledge that is our birth right as human beings.

Blood sugar regulation. I used to have to eat every two hours to avoid sugar crashes. Like a hobbit - breakfast, second breakfast, elevenses...to go to work I had to bring a seemingly huge amount of food with me. Now, I eat 2-3 times a day, rarely snack, can easily go 6 hours between meals, and, if necessary, can skip a meal without getting shaky and lightheaded.

Me too! Before I had to eat so often I was scared to go anywhere without a bag of food. Now I'm ACTUALLY full for 3+ hours. What a difference. – KellyBoBelly Jul 5 2011 at 22:10
hahaha +1 for "elevensies!!" – Futureboy Jul 6 2011 at 5:41
Yes! I had this too. Can't help but wonder - now that you've mentioned it - if improved BG regulation isn't one of the major drivers behind my improved mood regulation/affect. – Katherine Jul 6 2011 at 9:23

EDIT SORRY, you said SINGLE Best? being able to concentrate and not thinking about food constantly!

__ all the other good things... no to low gas, clear skin, less wrinkles, not always THINKING about food, not always hungry, weigh a few pounds less but I am working on getting more weight off.

My biggest problems are sleeping due to night work schedule, an consistant walking which helps tremendously with not only weight loss but IBS-w/Constipation....my bloating is gone as long as I walk a couple of miles daily but I have been a sloth since it is so hot in Florida. However, I went on Vacation for 9 days in yellowstone/jackson hole and lost weight...ON VACATION!

Agree with Theresa on the rumination issue. When I was higher carb and non-Paleo, I was thinking about food CONSTANTLY. Now it's down to enough of a dull roar that I can focus on other things or, amazingly, not think about food at all for like, 10 minutes! :) Also, no more 3pm crash. – LadyAdmin Jul 5 2011 at 19:22
Geez. I usually gain 10lbs on vacation. That's great! – KellyBoBelly Jul 5 2011 at 22:15

It's an awesome benefit for sure, but after you spend years pretty much crippled with anxiety, depression, psoriasis, symptoms of lupus, ms, sjogren's symptoms....well, weight loss and body benefits are small potatoes in comparison:) – Katherine Jul 5 2011 at 20:46

I'm deep into my 50s and trying very hard to get my daughters on board with this. One is a gamer and has a very bad Mountain Dew habit and a deep love for all things packaged. – Deborah105 Jul 6 2011 at 8:57

Weight loss, higher energy, no tummy troubles, buying normal clothes sizes...

...To be continued (I hope).

Elimination of a life-long Excedrin and Tums habit - headaches and heartburn that I had come to think of as normal and just a part of life went away completely.

Bet you don't miss that. – KellyBoBelly Jul 5 2011 at 22:16

Confidence.

Since it is too hard to specifically say the weight loss, muscle toning, higher energy, better looking, more alert, no more gas, no more gout, no more acne, or no longer dependent on OTC medicines as being the best thing, I'll just have to say the over all confidence that all of those things combined have given me. I walk out of the house 10 feet tall and bulletproof every day.

Hi, newbie here. I've been on the Paleo diet about 2.5 weeks. After getting over the low-carb flu (still some muscle soreness occasionally) I have to say I noticed the better stools also. The biggest changes so far are:

-- no longer feel bloated all the time, which used to be a big issue with me.
-- my skin feels so much better and not so dry. Not using nearly as much lotion. -- Very even flow of energy. I can work out, or go for a long walk, and not crash afterwards. I might be tired for a while but not completely wiped out like I used to be. -- Feeling energized after eating a meal, instead of stuffed and sleepy.

That's awesome that it's gotten good for you so quickly, meaning your low-carb flu didn't last too long. Some people take a month or more to adjust. – KellyBoBelly Jul 5 2011 at 22:14

Ditto on the skin - my formerly freakishy, abnormally dry skin is so normal now. I rarely use lotion even in the winter. – Katherine Jul 6 2011 at 9:26

I figured out how to not have migraines by avoiding gluten. I had no idea and had assumed that the family migraines were hormonal and I could do nothing except choose an early surgical menopause or keep treating them when I can.

I wonder if many people make that connection. Interesting Vrimj, thank you. – KellyBoBelly Jul 5 2011 at 22:16
My FIL has terrible migraines and I can't even talk him into dropping gluten. It makes me sad! – sherpamelissa Jul 6 2011 at 0:39
Well I never would have found it if I hadn't gone paleo and cheated :) – Vrimj Jul 6 2011 at 1:41

This isn't exactly what you are asking, but the most important thing I have gotten out of Paleo (Primal) was Katherine convincing me to get enough vitamin D. That, of course, has helped my breathing, skin, and too many other things to list. Thanks Katherine. I'm glad Paleo has helped you so much.

Wow! I'm so glad to have offered helpful information to you. Since it's pretty much what makes me tick, it's good to know that occasionally people actually do benefit. You just made my day:) – Katherine Jul 6 2011 at 9:29

For me, it was like a switch going on (or off) so it's hard to think back to how things were before Paleo. Let's see. . .

More energy, definitely. I always had this problem when training for a marathon -just being wiped out during & after long runs. Sunday, I ran 14 miles on an empty stomach and didn't even eat for a couple hours afterwards 'cause I wasn't hungry. Very different.

Trusting myself and my body. I now love my body and listen to it and trust it. Before it was at best something I had to manage/control or at worst my enemy.

Community -- finding you all. It is so great to find all these like-minded people. I never felt like I really fit in with the vegan crowd, even after 35 years.

No gas/bloating, lost the weight I needed to lose, clear skin, great hair, saving money (on soap, shampoo, etc.) starting to get stronger, but even more -- I found a way of getting stronger that I want to do because it's play (MovNat).

Feeling like my lifestyle is a celebration of myself and all humans as children of God, "not damaged by default" as Angelo Coppolla says.

  • I never get sick or suffer from allergies.
  • I no longer suffer from migraines or headaches in general.
  • I have nice clear skin and no wrinkles at all at 32 (many of my friends this age have crows feet at least).
  • I wake up so much more easily and have more energy.
  • I was able to ditch all prescription meds.

Those are some damn good benefits. Thanks vdh! – KellyBoBelly Sep 6 2011 at 2:36

I'm only 8 days in. And not certain if my 8 days are totally Paleo (no sugar or grains in this time however), but reading all of this is making me so excited for the next 8 days.

I'm working on getting my Vit D levels up (super low - found out during routine yearly exam) so I'm not having the huge energy just yet.

My skin looks good to me though.

Exciting stuff around here.

Shallow as it is, I think my favorite side-effects are the flattering 10 lbs of curves and muscle I've put on over my bones and the CLEAR SKIN. I still can't believe I don't have acne any more.

Although the increased strength and endurance, consistent energy, lack of IBS and painful/draining periods, and vastly increased resistance to illness are pretty sweet too...
