I am eating Paleo (almost entirely pure, some bad carbs, no gluten) and I have had a tendency lately to wake up feeling really depressed and with anxiety about a lot of things I worry about. This feeling remains until I eat my breakfast (usually a couple of eggs with veggies) and then it weens off. I'm sensitive to cortisol which I reckon is my issue here and although I wake up by myself I still get this feeling.
I'm a bit tired of waking up with that feeling all the time although I know it subsides once I eat, I just dread waking up in the morning. Any suggestions about what it can be, or how to mitigate it?
i believe the theory is that your body peaks cotrisol production in the morning to raise your blood pressure, so you can go from a horizontal to a vertical state without passing out. ive seen some people suggest that you can mitigate your cortisol production by consuming salt water immediately upon waking.
although i imagine many other factors could play into this, for example if your body could not produce enough cortisol and started releasing nor epinephrine? (IIRC)(not 100%) possibly due to not getting what it needs from your diet or if your over excreting cortisol because your stressed all the time.(from other reasons)
I am sorry to hear that you feel this way. Especially if you are dreading sleep. That can't be helping. Do you think it could be the seasons changing? Or possible just not enough vitamin D or sunlight? I just want to offer some questions up that you may not have thought of so we can fix this. If you are new to paleo for many people, myself included, there is a transition period that can involve some adverse moods, depression, etc. I can tell you that if that is the case it will pass soon, and then you will be feeling a whole different kind of amazing.
Other things to consider are maybe double checking your omega 3 intake or supplementing with vitamin D. If you think it is season related there are light boxes you can get that I have heard help with depression. But as you said it is only an issue in the morning. Maybe too many electronics on as you sleep? Or bad dreams you don't remember? Tell me if those questions jog any ideas and we can work it out some more.
Best of luck! @Shibby86
Did you just start reducing carbs within the last few weeks? If so, this could pass soon.
I hate to jump to vitamins/minerals but....
Do you eat liver or take a b complex? Liver is better of course. This could easily help with depression/anxiety.
Do you supplement magnesium at night for sound sleep and other benefits? Do you get some sun during the day AND take some vitamin D upon waking? Almost nobody living a modern lifestyle (even paleo) gets enough of these and the vitamin D can really jump start your circadian rhythm.
Of course, don't get me started on balance with supplementation. I recommend cronometer.com to see if you have enough vitamin K to make vitamin D supplementation safe. And before eating much liver, make sure you get vitamin D to prevent vitamin A toxicity.
Not exactly what you want to worry about if you're stressed.
