5 days in Mexico and on the last day I was really sick, fever, chills, nausea. I slept most of the day and felt perfect by the end of the day but I've had diarrhea since (3 days now). Even with the issue I've felt fine. Is there something I can take to help speed up the process to clear this bug out?
Make sure you stay hydrated, eat food with lots of Vitamin C and get lots of rest. If you take homemade kefir, kombucha, or any fermented foods maybe add a second does per day for the next several days.
Last time we were in Mexico we were told that the water contains a ton of minerals and when they get into the stomach, they can cause the runs - sort of the way magnesium oxide does.
Your symptoms do sound very much like those of a parasite or bacterial infection. Antibiotics may be a good idea. I'd say see a doctor. The advice about kombucha, fermented foods, vitamin C is good. I'd add bone broth (or failing availability, good old gelatin) and L-Glutamine.
I'd recommend against taking it into your own hands, but should you choose, things like olive leaf extract, oregano oil (be very very careful with this one!), cinnamon oil, and good old coconut oil can be good antibacterials.
If you must, use aspirin, stay away from ibuprofin.
Thanks - I started using oregano oil a couple of days ago and just added in some raw honey late yesterday. I put coconut oil in my coffee every morning and I'll probably go ahead and add some gelatin. I've turned the corner today and I'm confident that I've got it under control.
during a trip in Yucatan, I disobeyed orders and I was getting the juice of 12 oranges a day in the street (I love those little juice bars, and it was about one dollar per 6 oranges juice). Temps were in the high 90. I was the only one doing it, and the only one NOT getting the runs in my group. The rest were literally spending their days sitting on the WC back in their hotel room. Stay hydrated, keep your vitamins and minerals up. In that heat, micronutrients are THE nutritional issue. At night I would get some locally prepared chicken and some rice and vegetables, nothing too taxing for my system, but regular food all in all.
