Does purple rice, "forbidden rice," black rice bran, anthocyanins have a place in Paleo/Primal? What about as a cheat meal or supplement? Can it harm the body? How would it affect gut inflammation? How strong is the evidence for/against purple rice and pros/cons for autoimmune disease, heart disease, cancer, etc. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21058201 Nutr Cancer. 2010;62(8):1128-36. Aren't these also present in purple potatoes? Tubers definitely have a place in Paleo/Primal! I think it's an interesting study, though. I'm not in the anti-rice camp whatsoever, as it doesn't tend to irritate the gut and you don't see many people showing up with rice allergies, lol.
My understanding is that white rice is 'OK'. Yes, in the case of rice, the more processing the better, as it removes the husk which is the part of the grain that is toughest on your gut. CW argues that brown/black rice is healthier, while it apparently does contain more nutritional goodness than white rice, most of it cannot actually be absorbed properly, so it's a moot point.
I think rice is an OK source of carbs for many people. I personally could only handle white rice, because I have serious digestive issues. I consumed wild rice for about a week because I read somewhere that they it was void of lectins, but my digestion wasn't to happy with it. If you could digest it, I think it could be a potentially safe source of starch.
Do not despair, you may enjoy the many benefits of black rice bran by making a tea. Place a cup or so of black rice in a pan, cover with water, warm slightly stir and let stand for a few minutes. Thats it just strain the water, don't spill any! It will be highly pigmented and practically flavorless. You can add some juice for flavor if you like, perhaps some goji berry juice and combine with a green tea extract to profoundly stimulate immune function.
With extraordinarily high phyto-nutrients, several anti-tomur compounds, virtually no calories, and low cost it is a top notch supplement in my book
Heres a fun fact: Black rice bran extract (as above) can be used as a very effective PH indicator! Just take a papertowel and soak with the extract. Then put a little lemon juice or vinegar in a spot on the papertowel(acidic indicator) See the color it makes! Now take a bit of Baking soda in another spot on the papertowel(basic indicator) and see what color it becomes, totally safe, useful and fun!
