I have been eating Paleo since March 1 with very favorable results. Lost 20 lbs, much improved body comp, great energy levels...the works.
After April 1, I added back in some dairy...pasture butter, cream and lately, I've been trying some cottage cheese in my smoothies or as a quick breakfast with some berries and almonds.
Any reason I should be avoiding cottage cheese? I've seen cottage cheese get the "ok on occasion" on a few paleo websites (MDA for one).
I personally like cottage cheese for a mass-gain/strength-gain phase or protocol. I generally avoid dairy if the goal is to be leaning out. With that being said, cottage cheese is an excellent whole food source of branched chain amino acids (BCAA). I'll hit it as my last feeding for the day. Sprout's (a "healthy" supermarket) carries cottage cheese from grass-fed aka pastured cows that is super legit.
If you're worried about the dangers of casein though, you should avoid it and other soft cheeses.

theres another post in the archives that mentions 'cashew cheese'.....I just happened to be looking for casein free cheese, to see if there is such a thing, turns out there is!
I haven't tried it but I'm planning on it! (I think you might be able to do the same with almonds?)

I like it personally and frequently eat it (mixed with some tuna) after my work outs. I don't know why but it makes me feel better to have cottage cheese with my meat rather than the meat all by itself. thats just what I have experienced with myself. My digestive system also reacts better (more regular) when i eat dairy products, so I try to eat at least one serving a day, but then again thats just my experience; other people react to it differently.

Seriously, as with ANY dairy, I make sure it is antibiotic & hormone-free at the very least & organic, 100% grass-fed at it's best.
I LOVE cottage cheese! Easy lower fat protein source (when I get tired of meat & eggs only) for leaning out.
I, personally, do not consume it. Its protein is mostly casein, which alters my brain chemistry (rendering me irritable and disoriented), tears up my digestive system, and makes my face break out in horrible, painful cystic acne.
It's convenient when scrounging for something quick. The 4% milk-fat brand we get is nearly 50% fat, most of which is saturated. Sometimes I'll stand in the middle of the kitchen and just start wolfing things down. Spooning in a couple of shots of cc will block my impulse to thrown down yet another fist full of nuts. Having a couple of quick, go-to snacks helps.
It's only recently that I found cottage cheese with no additives, so I reconsider it. My problem is, that I have to be creative in using it, as I can't stand its flavor. I can't eat too much dairy or my skin acts out... but ones in a while, especially as a fast lunch for work it would be great. I wouldn't make it into a daily meal, but once in a while, if you tolerate dairy well, why not?
