I am not full blown diabetic (type 1) or full blow hashimoto's, but I do have the antiobodies to my pancreas' islet cells and my thyroid. My most recent blood work after 2 months of diet change showed hemoglobin A1C dropped to 5.3 and thyroid levels are in the normal range (before they were at the lowest end of normal). I also have IBS (which is so much better since changing my diet) and I'm gluten intolerant (tested negative for Celiac, but gluten makes me all kinds of miserable).
Should I be following the autoimmune protocol? I can't see my life without eggs, nuts or cheese ( I know, I know. Not paleo). Trying to lose ~13 pounds. I've upped my fat intake (67g/day), lowered my protein (90g/day) and keep carbs low (~60g/day - sometimes I don't get there).
If you do recommend following the autoimmune protocol, can you provide some meal suggestions? Especially breakfast - I have eggs almost everyday! Thanks!
Yes, food makes a big difference in autoimmune conditions. I can't say it'll cure them, but it will certainly make life a lot easier. For breakfast, try bacon (turkey bacon, too), avocados (lots of avocados!). But honestly, don't cut out any foods unless you feel worse when you eat them. If they make you feel truly healthier, there's no reason to cut them out. Good Luck!
Coming from someone with Crohn's and Ankylosing Spondylitis, there are absolutely some foods you should avoid. Now, what foods those are depends every bit on the individual. Start with the AP and begin to reintroduce foods.
I didn't begin with the AP, but I think it has some value for newbies, especially with autoimmunity, if only as a strict foundation to follow and then begin to reintroduce certain foods and see what is and isn't problematic.
Specifically to your question about eggs: I can't be sure of it, but I get the feeling that pre-paleo and following a god awful SAD, I was intolerant to eggs. But after a year of eating semi-strict paleo, I feel like I may have healed my gut, and now I eat eggs daily. So my point being, start off AI if you wish, then reintroduce eggs and see how you feel. If that doesn't work out, also try introducing full fat greek strained yogurt and berries and see how that feels. Those have been what I eat in the morning 95% of the time the past 2.5 years.
I don't know enough about the AP to offer breakfast suggestions outside of eggs and yogurt and berries.
I have vitiligo but I eat egg yolks every day and they really don't make me feel bad as milk, gluten and grain do. I think you have to feel it yourself. I felt so much better after eliminating gluten and I cannot feel any difference after avoiding eggs for a couple of days so I keep eating the yolks as it is a perfect source of protein and fat.
