A few months ago, I discovered that I had a pretty severe magnesium deficiency. Taking supplements cured a great many of my nagging ills, and I felt like a new person, truly better than I’ve ever felt before.
So, wanting to share the wealth, I started my husband on magnesium supplements too. I put him on a modest 200 mg a day. Seeing as Chris Kresser advocates a maintenance dose of 400 mg a day for healthy people, this seemed like a pretty conservative move.
Well, this has had an unexpectedly large effect on him. The most noticeable thing was his sex drive — it shot through the roof! I’m talking about two or three times a day, every day. He sustained this pace for two or three months before “crashing” back to his previous once a day level.
The other thing is that he’s sleeping a lot more. He used to be able to run on 5-7 hours of sleep and loved to get up at 5 AM and work. Now he’s sleeping in until 9 or 10 AM and feels more tired all day too.
I’ve asked him about his stools, and he says they got a little looser after the mag supplements, but not by a whole lot.
So … I don’t even know what question to ask. Is this normal? Anyone else experience this? Could this be a genetic thing? (He's of Northern European descent -- nothing fancy, as far as we know.) Are these signs of too much magnesium or of a deficiency that is being corrected? Stick with it, abandon it? Drink more milk?

Are you sure it's "too much"? Maybe being without magnesium, zinc, and other important nutrients, for too long, via SAD foods, changed your and his idea of what's a normal sex drive?
That said, yes, loose stools means either not enough absorption of magnesium (possibly from the wrong type - i.e. Magnesium oxide), or too much magnesium.
Try the honey at bedtime - when I combined that with mag I got the best night's sleep in decades. Woke up so rested it was a pleasure.
The way I take mag is through epsom salt spray. Better than pills, in my view. The results are a bit noisy, but the trend is steady, ie. some nights better than others, but all nights better than before the combination. And I mean sleep, not randiness.
I'd use the Perfect Health Diet as a source of supplementation info over Kresser. Having just skimmed his book it is seriously lacking in science.
I also take the glycinate form, waiting for the 2-3 day thing however. <g>
Any idea what is really "normal"?
I'm not sure I could ever sustain 2-3 times a day for more than a couple days, but I've been trained off by my GF anyway to a few times a week at best. What's the "normal" range? I find myself getting politely turned down pretty frequently.
Granted: we're both very busy, so I'm not sure if she just "doesn't feel like it" or if she's sometimes making a judgement call my precious gems prevent me from making. I have to say, we'd probably have been late to work more than a couple times had she given in.
Not to seriously hyjack the thread, but what's "healthy"? I've heard about a lot of guys purposefully restricting their sex drive and claiming amazing results as far as their focus, conversational abilities, and other aspects of life...
