I couldn't find a duplicate of this question, so here goes : how often do you guys poop? I don't know if I'm constipated, but I don't poop very often. Normally it's every 2-3 days. I eat 200g fat every day, most of it from coconut and olive oil. I also drink aloe vera juice, eat more than enough fiber (30-35g), drink enough water, ... Am I doing something wrong, or is this totally normal?

It could be the water I'm drinking, it has 200mg calcium/liter...

I'm hesitant to vote anything up on this question. You're supposed to stop getting praise for pooping by the time you're a grown-up. – Stabby Jul 11 2011 at 21:14

Funny how there're so many answers to this question... Poop & sex seem to get our attention! – Efaitch Jul 11 2011 at 21:29

@Efaitch - at the end of the day, is there anything more Paleo than shitting and screwing? – Aravind Jul 11 2011 at 22:02

For me every 2-3 days usually within 1 hour of my first meal, been like this for a few years, after healing IBS issues. I think every one can have a different schedule, but I doubt it is absolutely necessary to go every day. The body knows when it has to eliminate waste, it is not based on what the human mind deems as right.

When I do go I am usually type 3 or type 4 on the bristol stool chart: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_Stool_Scale

Once a day, usually. I eat a lot of vegetables now, when I first started 'paleo' and didn't, it was more often every other day. Pre-paleo at the height of my IBS, as much as 8 times daily. D:

Fat, protein and simple starches are almost completely absorbed by the body. Unless you are eating ample amounts of veg (and or fruit, and nuts) - a paleo diet can be what is medically defined as a 'low-residue diet'. IE one specifically designed to produce almost no solid waste. Considering this, it's definitely not surprising to me that so many people eating this way don't poop a lot.

There is no evidence I've ever seen that it's objectively healthier to poop more. What matters is stool quality and consistency, not frequency. Human poop should have some structure, yet be soft enough to be passed comfortably and quickly. It should not be dry or compacted (and painful or strenuous to pass), neither should it be liquid-y or contain undigested fat or food. As long as your poop is within those parameters indicating good gut health and proper digestion, it doesn't matter at all whether you go twice a week or twice a day.

The majority of the bulk in a healthy stool is spent gut bacteria. If your diet is good and you're concerned, get thee a decent probiotic and titre up. Magnesium deficiency can also mute the peristoltic response. – LaurenM Feb 13 2012 at 9:29

Less frequently than when I was eating grains, etc, definitely less than once a day. But since there's no discomfort associated with it, it's no biggie to me.

Me too! I feel better about it now. I was feeling jealous when I'd read about ya'lls epic poops. Nothing epic here so far. – Deborah105 Jul 12 2011 at 10:16

Are you feeling well with your current 'deposit schedule'? If you are feeling great and the product you are producing is 'high quality', I'd say leave it as it is. If you are used to a higher rate of return, maybe you're diet or fluid intake needs increasing? I don't watch fiber intake, but I do drink plenty of water. I go consistently twice a day. If I miss one of my usual appointments, I feel bloated and gross. Some people Go more than others and it's perfectly fine. However, if your bowel habits suddenly change or you're not feeling your best, it's worth further investigation.

...too funny but I was wondering how to ask the same question. Unfortunately I go anywhere from 4-12 times depending on how bad my GI system is that morning!

i was thinking this morning if I should put up a Hack my Poop question ....

Me too! Strangely enough, in the morning - by mid day / afternoon, things have usually calmed down a lot! – andrew Feb 13 2012 at 8:11

Kelly...i used to have the same problem. Make sure your strict on the ALL grains and bone broth will do you wonders. I am down to an acceptable 2 bms a day. – hemanvt Feb 13 2012 at 12:35

Usually once a day, but I have to make the time for it. I used to struggle with constipation, and it's taken a lot of trial and error to find my routine. I, personally, found that CALM magnesium at night, triphala in the morning, and a good 45 minutes on the Internet gets me, ehem, going. My doctor said that he has to play Scrabble on his iPad in order to go... My friend swears by browsing in bookstores... I really think, for those who struggle with regularity, that there's something to be said about taking the time for mental relaxation- the 'second mind' will follow!

Well, since you asked...

At least once a day, after drinking my green tea. And sometimes in the morning after a large meal the night before.

once a day, upon the first few sips of my morning coffee.

At least once a day, usually just after waking up. It's a much more pleasant experience than when I was eating grains, that's for sure!

Whenever I feel like it!

Actually once if I haven't had a lot of fiber and twice if I have.

2-3 times a day, I eat 100% paleo but am extremely active and eat a lot more then most people. 3000-4000 calories a day to support my intense training load.

Daily, usually once (after breakfast and my morning tea), sometimes twice (bonus poo after lunch! :D).

However, I'm pretty atypical in that I abused the hell out of my digestive system for years with laxatives and purging and vegetarianism and I actually have to induce peristalsis with my morning tea or I'm in quite a bit of discomfort for the rest of the day. I'm still healing, though, and I've finally gotten to a place where I can go without caffeine (herbal tea in the morning, versus green tea).

Paleo has helped exponentially. :)

I usually go once every day/other day, even on my non IF days. but, as im working to improve my hip flexibility, i notice that my bowel movements are more frequent than usual, especially right after the hip mobility drills. so maybe hip posture or overall alignment plays a key on how you shit? Just a thought...

Once every 1-3 days. Often after drinking green tea.

I'm irregular. Was always irregular and thought there was something wrong, but now, on the Taubes diet, I'm irregular and it feels just right. Don't even ask me to average out the count of days, it just happens and it's great. Oh but, go easy on the jicama, eh?

I'm glad somebody asked, because before paleo I would go about 1-2 times a day. But when I started paleo, I go once every 2-3 days now. Weird, anybody have an answer to why?

My stool is almost always perfect now (wipes clean) and it comes out in one LONG chunk lol(especially when I've had chicken feet soup). I defecate about 1-2 times a day.

Once or twice per day. That's my lifelong pattern, except now I get bulk from fruit rather than grain.

once or twice a day always.

When strict on the Paleo diet, once every day when I first wake up, like clockwork. Never been this regular in my life. Sometimes another one here or there, usually related to a dietary cheat or unusual bio item (i.e. jet lag).

Once a day, only miss a day if I go back on the SAD, like on a weekend.

I usually go once a day, but find if I go VLC then I can skip a day. 3-4 on the Bristol Stool Scale (I found out about this from a nurse friend of mine). Mine are usually, let's say, on the large side too (but easily passed).

Anywhere from once per day to once every 2 days. Depends on what I've been eating. Lower carb tends to be once every 2 days.

once every 2 days... long as I go when I wake up or else I might miss my window of opportunity!

Usually twice, once first thing in the morning before a 6:00 a.m. workout (after a few sips of coffee) and once about 9:00 a.m. after a big breakfast post-workout. Sometimes a small one in the afternoon, but I don't count on that one. I usually eat a big dinner and am ready to go upon waking. If I don't go in a day, I am massively uncomfortable and bloated. Maybe that is in my head, but I don't think so. When I travel, I stop going and get miserable pretty quickly.

Now that I'm eating about 3 times a day. I poop at least once a day, sometimes twice. When I was eating six times a day it was about 3 times a day.

I also notice my poop loads are down from when I ate grains. Initially when eating Paleo, I pooped way more and then after a couple months the amount dropped.

When eating vlc Paleo, usually twice. Once in the morning and once in the evening.

I definitely go less frequently, sometimes even once every 3-4 days. It's not a problem if you feel fine, though I occasionally get painfully constipated =/

2

I used to go once a day, but since starting a paleo diet it's more like once every 2-3 days. I don't have discomfort, but I'm definitely concerned. That seems really unhealthy to me.
